The Lululemon Upload is up! Nothing for me today (yet) but I am eyeing up the Essential Tank to purchase. I just can’t decide if I want the forest green or navy. I’m also really loving the new color fig and would love an Essential Tank in that color as well. Breeze By White Light Cast and Summer Haze Multi are both very pretty prints. I’m actually on vacation right now and have a nearby Lululemon and I want to run over and try the new Shaped Shorts, because they look perfectly casual for summer, yet dressy.

Did you order anything? What are your thoughts on these new colors and prints?

Essential Tank

Ugh! What color do I pick? I’m normally definitely a green person but both the green and navy are calling to me equally here.

Guest Post: These Protein Shakes Will Improve Your Workouts

by Cristina June 3, 2017
written by Cristina

Since Sundays are generally slow blog days, and I need to occasionally remind myself to step away from the computer and take a day off from blogging (and all the blogging duties that don’t result in actual content), I’ve decided to open up a feature guest post to a fitness professional that can share some helpful information for us. Daniel from Fitness Crab in Toronto reached out to me last week with an idea for this post, and since I’m always wondering about protein powders and how and when I should take them I thought this was a great post idea. I recently dabbled in the IIFYM diet and found protein intake was the hardest part, so I was very personally interested in what a personal trainer had to share about protein shakes.

Please refer to your own Dr. for nutrition advice. This is simply an informative post and not meant to replace the advice of your own Dr. or health professional.
This is not sponsored content.

Protein Shake

Homemade proteins sound old fashioned, especially if you are going to use powder-based products that do nothing for your taste buds. But you can still get the 0.8 grams per kilo of bodyweight (the required amount for building and repairing muscle) with all-natural ingredients. According to Carly Tierney, the nutrition and resident fitness expert of DW Fitness Club, protein shakes can be made from natural ingredients. Here are different the protein shakes:

A Homemade Proteins Shake For Muscle Building

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup of Greek yogurt
  • ½ heaped cup of spinach
  • ½ an avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon of hemp powder
  • 1 tablespoon of algave

Directions

Put all the ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.

Benefits

This shake is packed with proteins and healthy fats to build muscle. It will also make you feel full for longer, a feature that most protein shakes lack. The half heaped cup of spinach offers antioxidants while the avocado offers 25 percent of the recommended vitamin K intake to make bones stronger and retain calcium.

A Homemade Protein Shake That Provides Energy and Immunity

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup of coconut water
  • 1/3 cup of Greek Yogurt
  • 1/3 cup of raw cashew nuts that have been soaked overnight
  • ¼ cup frozen pineapple
  • 1/3 cup frozen mango
  • I pitted dried date

Directions

Blend all the ingredients until they are smooth. Top the protein shake with chia seeds when serving.

Benefits

Coconut water contains about 15 times more potassium than conventional energy drinks (470 milligrams per eight ounces) maintaining high energy levels without the added sugars. This is then enhanced by the number of high-quality natural protein sources. The Greek yogurt is low in carbs and offers plenty of microbes that enhance the health of the digestive system. On the other hand, the cashew nuts contain plenty of vitamin E which protects the immune system and prevents prostate cancer.

Homemade Proteins Shake That Helps with Recovery

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup of almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons of almond butter
  • ¼ cup of raw cashew nuts that have been soaked overnight.
  • 1 medium banana cut into chunks and frozen.
  • 2 tablespoons of whole oats
  • 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed
  • 1 pitted dried date and a pinch of cinnamon

Directions

Blend all the ingredients until smooth. Top the shake with grated coconut when serving.

Benefits

Almond milk is an alternative source of calcium. It is low in calories making it a favorite among dieters. One cup of almond milk offers the recommended daily vitamin E intake. It is also an antioxidant that improves the functioning of the heart and helps prevent cancer.

Additionally, this shake has more important nutrients such as the potassium provided by the banana. The oats help to reduce blood pressure levels. The flax seed and the date offer the daily recommended fiber intake.

Are Protein Shakes Safe?

According to Abbas Ali, a celebrity fitness trainer, protein powders are as unsafe as Horlicks, Boost, and Bournvita or they wouldn’t have been sold over the counter. Ali says that he would not give protein powders to someone who is not working out because they obviously do not need that much protein.

Which Is The Top Best Protein Shake In The Market Today?

The number one protein which I personally use is hydrolyzed whey protein. It is a first class protein because it is of high quality and it has been pre-digested (broken into amino acids). I recommend hydrolyzed whey protein for everyone, whether you want to lose or gain weight.

Forget About Mass Gainers

According to Ali, mass gainers will waste our money. A good alternative to a mass gainer is using hydrolyzed whey protein, oats, bananas, and peanut butter to make a smoothie. In order to lose weight, I remove the oats and bananas from the recipe but I keep the peanut butter because of its healthy fats.

The reason why I am against mass gainers is because they use inferior protein quality such as a mixture of hydrolyzed, isolate, casein, and concentrated protein. According to Ali, hydrolyzed protein alone improves recovery and performance in the gym.

How Much Protein Powder Should You Take Each Day?

In order to get ripped muscles and overall definition, Ali recommends using one and a half to two spoons per serving. Reduce this amount to one spoon when performing functional training, where I do 30 reps at once for 10 exercises.

Which Brands Are Safe And Reliable?

According to Ali, these are the safe and reliable brands you can buy: GNC, Nature’s Bounty, VPX, Labrada, and Universal Nutrition. These brands are US-based and they distribute their products from two-three dealer stores, so that you get genuine products at all times.

The Lululemon Upload is up!

Nothing for me just yet on the Lululemon Upload but I am loving the new Cherry Blossom Pink a lot. I’d love to see an Essential Tank or even a Love Tee in this color. Can you imagine the frenzy over a Cherry Blossom Pink Essential Tank? Lululemon can’t, that’s why we won’t have it. I’m also liking the Black Currant Define Jacket, and the Jade Twist & Train Crop. I’m undecided on the mesh inserts in the Twist & Train Tank – Lole has a tank with similar mesh inserts in it called the Anka Tank that I’ve been eying for a while now. I have to be good this week though and not order anything. I’m letting myself keep those Adidas Ultra Boost X  sneakers I reviewed yesterday if and only if I don’t order any Lululemon this week and next! And I need to keep those sneakers.

Did you order anything? What do you think of the Cherry Blossom, Jaded, and Seascape dashes of color?

Adidas Ultra Boost X Parley

by Cristina May 30, 2017
written by Cristina

My Adidas Ultra Boost X Parley arrived!! OMG the color is just stunning! These are a special edition Adidas Ultra Boost colab with Parley for the ocean and they are so cool because they are made of recycled ocean plastics, and each shoe is made from at least 11 bottles. This includes the laces, the cage, and the primeknit – all of it except for the soles. Adidas has made it a goal for all of their shoes to be made out of recycled ocean plastics by 2020! I’ve included parley video below in case any of you are curious about this particular collaboration. The oceanic colors of this shoe are just so gorgeous in person and they’ve done such a great job marrying the ocean theme to this shoe!

Adidas Ultra Boosts

Adidas Ultra Boost X Parley

I don’t think I’ve owned any performance Adidas runners before, only their casual street wear shoes which I love. I was really curious about some of the design details of the Adidas Ultra Boost Parley and how it would translate for me and my gym use needs. The floating arch was designed specifically with the woman’s foot arch in mind and it conforms to your foot while giving support.  This is a neutral shoe which I like, especially for multi purpose gym use. The heel lift at the back is actually perfect for me for squats, as is the way this laces up. Over the years I’ve learned that for my body, for lifting, a flat shoe is better than a built up running shoe, and a shoe with a heel lift is better for me than either. Metcon’s are just OK but they are kind of terrible for me for running in, and terrible for me for heavy lifts – great for deadlifts though and box jumps and burpees. When I actually need the heel lift for a lifting wod it’s kind of a pain to have to switch out my shoes for my lifters. So far I think these are going to be great for me.

Adidas Ultra Boost X Parley Women's

One thing I was uncertain about on the design of these shoes was wether or not I would like the sock ankle on me. I was really worried about how high up the cuff would go on my foot and if it would look weird but actually, I find it hits me in a really flattering spot. I was also worried about the flexible primeknit uppers around the top of my foot because this is an area that my foot tends to want to roll out a bit during lifts making my knees track incorrectly.  Despite the soft sock, I find the laces and the cage, as well as the heel cup keep my foot firmly in place. Thanks to the primeknit fabric, these shoes are also incredibly breathable and lightweight. I’m going to be gravitating to these for my summer workouts for sure. In the above photos you can see I’m wearing socks with them, and how much of my very low profile socks show at the top. The photos below are all taken without socks and they are equally comfortable without socks – and this is coming form someone who would never normally go sock free in a pair of sneakers.

If you are in Canada and you are thinking of getting these Adidas Ultra Boost Parley, take advantage of the Sport Check sale (Adidas Ultra Boost X Parley) – $25 off! I think Americans can also order off Sport Check but I’m not certain. Adidas has these in stock currently which is what my image links are below, or here.

Olympic Lifting & Crossfit

Olympic Weightlifting + Nike and Athleta OOTD

by Cristina May 27, 2017
written by Cristina

It’s a gorgeous day in Vancouver today at 30*c and high UV index so I was really happy to wear this nice cool and breezy tank for todays workout. Lots of bunny hops across the gym with the bar in snatch position overhead, and behind the ears. Fun times!  I hope you don’t mind another Nike OOTD but this is my new favourite outfit combination and I had to share it. The bright colors are giving me life! I have a post coming up about this tank tomorrow. The bottoms are the Athleta Mantra Capri‘s I reviewed the other day. They where awesome for todays workout, even in this heat! No creepy sweat marks, no yanking them up constantly. They where perfect! It’s always a really good test for how well pants are going to stay up when you have to do bunny hops across a gym and your hands are busy holding a bar so you cannot yank your pants up as they slowly creep down, revealing your butt crack. This did not happen today, but it has in the past.

Nike Breeze Knit Tanks and Tees, Dry Element 1/2 Zip

by Cristina May 27, 2017
written by Cristina

I have become OBSESSED with Nike Dry Knit Tanks and Tees. I first did a review of the Nike Dry Knit and then this week I have gone back in hunt for more. The obsession started after trying them on but I was especially obsessed with getting the rainbow colorway you see below which was online in one size, but not available at the Nike store. I also hadn’t tried on the short sleeve version yet because I was worried it would be too clingy. I hit the jackpot this week when I found the rainbow in a tank and a tee, on sale at SportCheck. If you are Canadian, check out SportCheck this week because they have an addition discount on purchases over 150 (24 off) or 300 (75 off). Such a great time to stock up on sneakers as well if you’ve been meaning to get a pair, or stuff for your kids. I purchased all of my items on sale but honestly I would love them at full price.

Nike Dry Knit Short Sleeve

I first hit the Nike store and tried on the knit tee for the first time in this gorgeous teal blue. I was so tempted to get it but it was full price and I decided to wait on it. I asked the sales associate how often they get new product and she told me they get ‘new season’ items every two months, but they get bits and pieces of items every day. She said in July these tanks and tees will be gone except for one or two neutrals, and they will have their cold weather run gear in – and they are expecting a lot of colors for fall/winter. The Nike website has a much larger inventory so the product they have there (and colorways) are older seasons, which is why the Nike store didn’t have the rainbow one I wanted. This is a size L and I’m very happy with the fit of it. It is similar to a swiftly tech SS, but the material is thicker and more flattering, yet it’s much softer and cooler. I love that I don’t have to size up in these because they are so thin that they expose every lump and bump. You definitely do not need washboard abs for this top. I have a hard time wearing swiftly tanks or tees in hot weather because they seem to trap heat – but this knit for some reason doesn’t even though it’s thicker. I also feel like this top is much less prone to snagging.

Nike Dry Knit Short SleeveAs you can see, the cut of this tee is very feminine and contoured, and the length is nice and long for  us long torso people.
Nike Dry Knit Short Sleeve

I’ve put this one on my Nike wish list and the moment it’s on sale, I will be snatching it up.

Nike Dry Knit Short Sleeve

After leaving the store I decided I would just go ahead and order the rainbow colorway I wanted since there was one size left online. As soon as I ordered I went in to the Sport Check flag ship store and there it was, on sale no less. I quickly called Nike and explained what happened and they where happy to cancel the order for me. The Sportcheck had the tank and the tee shirt, as well as several other colorways. This one is by far my favourite though. I love that all of these breeze knits are marled multi color knits. They are so vibrant in person!

Nike Dry Knit Short SleeveNike Dry Knit Short Sleeve

Nike Dry Knit Running Tank

I wasn’t planning on getting another knit but I really loved this marled blue one. It has light sky blue mixed in with a pretty darker blue.

Nike Dry Knit Running TankNike Dry Knit Running Tank

My new collection. These have completely replaced CRB’s for me, which is making a huge statement. According to the sales associate I spoke to, this is a repeating style for Nike but this years version is a new cut. The double strap detailing is new, and they are more contoured and long.

These have completely replaced CRB’s for me.

Nike Dry Knit Running Tank

Nike Dry Element 1/2 Zip

Another item I tried on and loved was this half zip. It’s incredibly soft, like old heathered RULU circa 2014. I loved this heathered menthol color as soon as I saw it so I snatched it up. There where other pretty colors like a heathered peach and a heathered light blue, and the Nike store had a really pretty heathered purple and heathered maroon. I loved this color though and I love that I got it for $36. I would not have otherwise purchased a full on winter top at full price at the beginning of summer. It’s not as detailed with feminine features like, the Inspire Pullover I have which has contrasted mesh, cuffins, cute reflective sayings on the cuffs, rushing at the neck etc. etc. but this is a nice streamlined feminine cut in an awesome color, and the sleeves and torso are nice and long. The top lengths where always an issue with me over at Nike. I used to find their tops way too short on me, but they seemed to have really updated the fit.

Fit Review: Athleta Mantra Capri

by Cristina May 26, 2017
written by Cristina

I did a fit review yesterday of the Athleta Striped Relay Capri and told you I was very happy with that purchase. These Athleta Mantra Capri are next level though. What I love most about them is this new signature material by Athleta called Powervita. Powervita is a high stretch lycra based material that feels very familiar to other ‘naked feeling’ athletic fabrics, only it’s thicker and more compressive. You get what I’m saying…? It even comes with a ‘lycra sport’ label on it which is where most high end athletic apparel brands have their fabrics manufactured. When you pick these pants up, they are weighty and silky and feel cool to the touch. I love the high waist on these and the fact that they are very smoothing and don’t feel hot on. I don’t think I have any negatives about these crops to offer you other than I wish they where called ‘crops’ and not ‘capris’. Doesn’t ‘capri’ sound so dowdy? these are not dowdy. This color is divine too. I’m very much a teal lover so the fact that these came in teal sealed the deal for me. If you where to try one pair of pants from Athleta, start with these, or really any of the Powervita tights.

Athleta Mantra Capri

I took an L in these and I’m a size 10 in other brands. I prefer a broader numbered sizing range because you get (or maybe it just feels like you do) a more precise fit. These fit perfect but I can tell that they are ever slightly more generous than a size 10, and in contrast, my Nike Power Legendary tights fit ever so slightly smaller than a 10, but not quite an 8. I would not have sized down to an M in these. The color is gorgeous, they fit well and they feel amazing on!

Fit Review: Final Lap Crop

by Cristina May 25, 2017
written by Cristina

A win for Lululemon this week, guys! I’m loving these Final Lap Crops. It’s a little bit strange the Final Lap Crops are called crops when they are really more like 7/8 length, but on some of you tall folks out there these may actually be long crops on you that hit mid calf. These are really similar to the Fast & Free Tights 7/8 tights but these are two inches shorter, and the hems are finished off which I love. I really like my Fast & Free Tights and crops but I do prefer a hemmed ankle and I don’t find the raw edge ads anything visually, and any streamlined effect is so negligible that it’s not worth calling it a ‘feature’. These have side holster pockets as well as a back zip pocket – they are truly a run crop.

The nitty gritty about these is that this Dark Forest color is actually pretty light,  so if you experience a little bit of cellulite show through on certain light colors, you may get that here. It’s not extreme though and I think it’s less than I see show through with light color align pants. I’m comfortable with a bit of cellulite showing through because all my coolest crossfit friends have cellulite. I do hate when it’s a lot of it showing through though and I know that is a consideration for most of you with light colors like this.  I find these an 8/10 as far as opacity, but I have to double check that in different harsher lighting. The color is divine! It’s a really pretty natural green without the brown tones of kaki, really more of a sage green. Of all the pieces that have come out in this color, I think it looks the prettiest in this nulux lycra material. The seam details are very slimming and flattering. If you are torn between Align Pants in this color and these pants I would definitely choose these as they are just as lightweight and soft (although not flannely feeling), more durable and better for multi purpose use.

Since I have you here, the Toothpaste Energy Bra has been added to the website. Toothpaste looks amazing with Dark Forest!

I’ll have my next Athleta review up for you later tonight or tomorrow morning. Stay tuned for that!

Guest Fit Review: Sun Setter Crop

by Cristina May 25, 2017
written by Cristina

Amazing reader ‘Mrs. O’ has shared with us some fit reviews with the help of her awesome husband taking photos for us. Huge thank you to the both of them!!

If you’d like to share fit reviews, you can email me here, or if you’d like to share or read fit reviews on the Lululemon Reviews Group on facebook, click on the link to join.

Mrs. O’s Fit Review:

Sun Setter Crop

I really like the fit and feel of the Sun Setter Crop.  It was TTS and opaque.  This is the new boysenberry color, which I like.  It’s not as deep a purple as black grape.  It has a bit more of a wine tone to it.  I’m wearing the anew singlet in black current so you can see the color difference.  I also think it would have been nice to pair the outfit with the quicksand define.  The only thing I didn’t like about the crop is how high the mesh goes up the leg. Even though I’m wearing nude undies, you can clearly see them.  (Thanks to the reader that suggested the VS cheeksters!  I really love wearing them under my tights.)  As much as I like these crops, I don’t think I feel comfortable with the fact my undies show.  Even though I have black grape and black current items, I was tempted to get these because of the subtle difference of boysenberry but the mesh kept my wallet in my purse.  (Thank goodness!)  I really like purple tones.
