Beauty Superfoods I’m Trying: Moon Juice Beauty Dust, Tocotrienols

by Cristina March 3, 2018
written by Cristina

Recently I was diagnosed with PCOS (more on that later), and one of the effects of PCOS that I’ve been having is a, let’s call it, a diminishing beauty bank. By beauty, I mean vitality. My skin has been dry and blotchy, my rosacea had flared. My hair had been falling out dramatically and breaking, my eyelashes were weak and sparse, my nails were weak and brittle. A whole smorgasbord of signals that my body hadn’t been at it’s best, and reflected on my outer appearance. Because of this, I’ve been sampling different products intended to nourish skin, hair, nails, hair and overall glow. This is not a plastic surgery type of fix which will give me bigger boobs and a whiter smile, this is simply enhancing my skin, nails and hair and making me the best healthiest version of me. With my PCOS diagnosis, I  have a medical protocol through my Dr. that I’ve been following (more on that in my PCOS post) and I’m not DIYing it, but in addition to my medication, I’ve been upping my supplement game. IF you have hormonal issues or you suspect you have PCOS, talk to your Dr. about it and run any supplements by them. Many herbal supplements (including ones popular for PCOS) can double up your medications so it’s always so important to let your Dr. know and probably your pharmacist too if you are taking anything herbal. This post kicks off a new section of this blog for health and wellness where I share with you different wellness recipes and rituals I’m trying out which have either helped or were a total bust.

I’ve been super curious about this brand Moon Juice that I’ve seen everywhere and in particular their Beauty Dust. I think I first heard about the brand on goop, Gwyneth uses these in her smoothies, and then saw the brand at Nordstrom and on Sephora.com and Urban Outfitters and in a variety of online articles. This type of herbal remedy was right up my alley because I’ve always been interested in supplements and natural remedies and I really liked that these dusts have a variety of ingredients that you can easily add into your smoothie. You could easily buy each individual ingredient at your local health food store but then you’d be taking a bunch of horse pills and tinctures and spending a fortune and pantry space real estate. This brand has the most potent version of these herbs in an elegant formulation that is frankly just fun to use.

Moon Juice Beauty Dust, Adaptogen Protein and Tocotrienol
Moon Juice Beauty Dust

I’ve tried a few of the herbs that are in this beauty dust before and I have to say that for such a tiny serving (1 teaspoon), this blend is very potent. This dust contains Lycium (Goji) Berry Powder, Schisandra Berry Powder, Rehmannia Root Extract, Ashwagandha Root and Leaf Extract, Amla Berry Extract, Pearl Extract, Stevia Leaf Extract. It tastes mildly of dirt and dust but 1 teaspoon in a smoothy is undetectable.  The pearl extract is probably the most intriguing ingredient here. Besides the adaptogenic herbal properties in this dust, there are a lot of trace minerals and amino acids which are what really contributes to the ‘beauty inducing’ claims.

Tocotrienols

After I placed my moon juice order I realized that I should have also added in the tocotrienols. I had read a lot on this form of Vitamin E and thought I could just easily just find this product at my local health store, or Whole Foods. Well, let me tell you it’s pretty much impossible to find locally and I would have saved myself a lot of footwork and shipping had I just ordered from Moon Juice. You can buy a mixed tocopherol/tocotrienol Vitamin E supplement but the tocotrienol amount is minuscule and this is an especially expensive vitamin because of how it’s processed – and that is also why most health food stores don’t carry it. My local vitamin store had only one in and it was $39. Toco ‘powder’ is very rich in tocotrienols and vitamin D and it’s the most bioavailable form of vitamin E. This means that your body is able to absorb this and use it readily, and unlike tocopherol, tocotrienol is dispersed throughout your body much easier. Vitamin E has huge benefits for hair, nail and skin as well as cardiovascular health, and it soothes inflammation. You often see beauty products with Vitamin E (the lesser tocopherol) because it’s so great for skin, but I think it’s it’s most effective ingested regularily instead of used topically. Tocotrienol/Vitamin E is not a huge part of our diets and it’s found in very few foods such as rice bran and palm oil and avocado in trace amounts.  A really great thing about buying the whole food powder vs the supplement is that its creamy and dissolves into coffee or water incredibly easily, and it tastes good. It tastes like blended sweatened oatmeal. You can use this to richen up a smoothies or a nut milk.
If you are in Canada, I was able to find a local company that has ‘tocos’ at an extremely affordable price. Check out The Gut Lab. I have noticed a huge difference in my skin taking this almost immediately. My hair is silky soft and smooth and the frizz is gone, and my skin is smooth and bouncy.

Adaptogenic Protein Blue Beauty

When my diet is on it’s A-game, I’m using a lot of protein supplements in my diet. If I’m doing Whole 30, I’m being mindful of getting plenty of whole food lean protein, and if I’m counting macros and calories I’m having to supplement with protein powders.  I typically use whey protein and my most recent was a fermented whey that I really like. Whey feels really heavy in my stomach though and takes a long time for me to digest and causes some gastro issues. I was curious to try this one because it’s a rice-based protein, low glycemic has excellent macros. The addition of adaptogenic herbs and tocotrienols is such a bonus in this type of product. I also loved the blue color due to the blue-green algae which has been so huge on Instagram smoothie bowl photos. I’m not very familiar with algae as a supplement and it’s benefits but I believe there are tons of amino acids in it and minerals. Ashwagandha is an herb that helps with a lot of PCOS symptoms, so I was happy to have it in this protein as well as in the Beauty Dust. I had already been supplementing Ashwagandha in the form of capsules but I much prefer the Moon Juice brand for that. To be honest, the capsules I had been previously using made me really nauseous and the ashwagandha in these products isn’t bothering me at all – and I’m noticing the adaptogenic affects much more in the form of better sleep and more even moods.

The Shopbop Sale is on! I’m new to Shopbop sales so I was unprepared that this one was happening but now is the time to stock up on jeans, and sneakers or anything pricey you’ve been saving up for! I have a list of items going I like to check for but I’m feeling more the gym gear at the moment, in particular the sneakers. Here are my Gym Picks! I’m going to go browse the Adidas Ultraboosts now, and maybe look at those Golden Goose Deluxe Brand Sneakers I posted about last week.

The Lululemon Upload is up!
Last weeks post: Lululemon Upload Guest Fit Review, Window Shopping,

Nothing for me today but I did consider the Heathered Dusty Rose Scuba. Also, the Side Story Tee. I have a black Side Story Tee from last year and it’s so great. I am considering the white one but, yuck at spending  $54 on plain white tee. I probably would have gotten it in a pretty pink/mauve tone.

I’m really curious about the Feeling Balanced Sweater. It looks like it has a lot of sheen to it which makes me think it has some polyester (or nylon) blended  in it to make it more of  a ‘sporty’ material. Although, 100% Merino Wool is the most sweat wicking temperature regulating so that is pretty sporty in itself, but maybe they where going for a sport look.  I much prefer 100% merino but it doesn’t say it is, it just says ‘merino wool’ under fabric, and that fabric section takes being as vague as possible very seriously.

Window Shopping: No Ka’Oi

by Cristina February 26, 2018
written by Cristina

I’m absolutely in love with this new brand called No Ka’Oi I spotted on Instagram yesterday, but I’m going to have to save my pretty pennies for it. Maybe I’ll make owning one of these items a fitness goal of mine and pay myself at the end of three months of going to the gym 4-5 days per week, or maybe I need to add an additional fitness goal to that. No! Being kind to myself – 4-5 days a week of physical activity is my goal. I noticed this brand a few months ago but the last season of items I wasn’t as crazy about. This new season of No Ka’oi items is obviously a hit because it was stocked a few days ago and already many pieces (even at the higher price range) are sold out.

The ruffles and colors on these pieces remind me of Lululemon 2013 and how excited I felt when I walked into the store and saw gorgeous vibrant and inspiring colors and prints and designs on technically elegant and functional fitness apparel.

No Ka’Oi Spring 2018

I just love the ruffles on these first two pieces, and the red, white and pink color blocking.

I love this sweater and would wear this with jeans and white sandals in the spring for sure, or to the gym as a to/from item.

I would wear this hoodie daily to the gym.

Metallics done right. Metallics in fitness apparel has been such a trend lately but it’s not always done right. Here it is a really nice, truly metallic finish without being extremely flashy or garish. I love that it’s got a sporty adidasesque stripe down the side.

Guest Fit Review: Train Times 7/8 Pant Hinshu Multi

Thanks to Mrs. O for this fantastic fit review!

Train Times 7/8 Pant Hinshu Multi

I had a quick second to stop by Lululemon to see the hinshu multi print in person.  I really liked the print.  Because it’s so colorful, it will be very versatile.  You’d be able to wear it with almost every color from pastels to bright colors depending on how you want to style it.  I selected the print in the Train Times Pant (one of my favorites).  I thought the mesh in the back would break up the print a bit and not seem so overwhelming on a 7/8 tight.  But in seeing the pictures, I’m almost thinking the solid print might look nice.  So, I’m going to try it in the Speed up or Fast & Free tights to see how I like the print solid.  Although the colors are bright, the striped pattern is subtle and breaks up the colors in such a way that it’s not overwhelming.  I think even ladies with thicker legs can pull off the print because the horizontal stripes are slimming and because of the color distribution it draws the eyes to the center.  The print is backed on white.  I did not notice any fading with the pattern on a knee bend or squat test in my TTS (4).  If you’re in between sizes the smaller size might show some pattern fading but I don’t think that much.  I pushed my fingers through the tight and it was still hard to see the white come through.  I tried it on with the Porcelain Pink Swiftly LS.  Surprisingly, the pink wasn’t as see-through as I thought it might be; especially considering I was wearing a bright green bra underneath.  It just so happened the Swiftly I tried on was the last one and in my size, so it was marked down.  Even though initially I wasn’t sold on the color, after having tried it on, I really liked it.  So, despite my spending ban, I purchased it on markdown.

I apologize for not taking pictures of the tags.  But since the items are old items that everyone knows about, I didn’t think it would matter.  But just in case you don’t know: the Train Times 7/8 Tight is $98 usd and made of full-on luxtreme; and the Swiftly Tech LS is $78 USD (which I got on markdown for $64).

Last weeks posts: Golden Goose Deluxe Brand, Stride Jacket II Fit Review Valentines Day Gift Guide The Lululemon Upload,

I had to go ahead and order the Stress Less Pullover because of that pretty pink. I’m very confused though. This pullover is very familiar and I know it’s an old style but I think Lululemon got the name wrong on this one. This is the original Stress Less Pullover which is longer and has more of a slouchy cowel neck. I’m blanking on what the name of this pullover actually was, do any of you remember? Anyways, I like it a lot so I ordered it. I also really like that new color in the Sculpt II tank, Pearl Pink, but it looks a bit sheer in this tank so I want to wait and see what else comes in this color. The Twist Back Tee is really pretty as well. I know a lot of you have been waiting for the colourful Hinshu print but I am obviously a fan of the pinks.

Did you order anything today? Try anything on this week?

Golden Goose Deluxe Brand

by Cristina February 16, 2018
written by Cristina

I’m so into the embellished luxury skater shoe lately. I’ve been really noticing the trend lately of luxury designers creating really casual distressed skate shoes like Gucci, Saint Laurent, Givenchy and the Lululemon staple on the website photos – Common Projects. I’ve also noticed the Louis Vuitton and Chanel versions which are way more embellished and glamorously tacky. The ones I liked where the more casual high-low look. This is such an extension of the athleisure trend, but actually, it’s a different trend altogether since it’s not at all a sports shoe, but more of a streetwear casual look, so it’s a niche trend I guess.  I’ve been doing some research on brands and ended up buying a pair on the resale market a few weeks ago. This was actually two-part research because I was also really interested in making a small ‘luxury’ purchase on a particular site that authenticates in order to review the process for a blog post. That post will be coming soon.

In my luxury sneaker search, I kept seeing Golden Goose sneakers pop up. I was so intrigued by this Italian brand (and made in Italy) because not only are the shoes not an obvious luxury brand with recognizable logos everywhere, it was a subtle ‘if you are in the know, you know’ type of branding, and it’s a cult label in the fashion world. My favorite thing about these shoes is that they are a very low profile on the ankle, and they have a hidden elevated heel. I find them so flattering on the leg and ankle and feminine with cropped jeans or shorts because of this.  I think they will be so versatile being able to wear these with shorts, crops, skirts, jeans or leggings 0r even dressed up with black pants.  The entire shoe including the insole is made of really high-quality leather, so you can easily wear these sockless without getting nasty smelling feet. The top of the inside of the shoe is lined with this really nice thin terry cloth and it feels really nice if you aren’t wearing socks. I think I’ll really appreciate that added touch in the summer. I’ve had my shoes for two weeks now and I wear them everywhere. I love them so much. I love how blingy they are and that although they are an ultra-casual shoe, they aren’t norm-core like the Common Projects are but more feminine and pretty like a ballerina flat would be. Except, of course, much more sporty than a ballet flat.

I love that they are distressed ‘just so’ so that I don’t have to be precious about wearing them or have anxiety about scuffing them up. The distressing was also a great feature because I purchased mine resale so I didn’t have to anguish over how perfect or imperfect they would be, nor did I pay anywhere near full price for them. The detailing on them are all so different and thoughtful. I especially love the ones I’ve seen with leopard print heel cups and star details, or the pink glitter ones on the Nordstrom website right now (shown below).

Interestingly, after I purchased my pair I went to Nordstrom yesterday and as of a week ago, the Nordstrom near me now carries this brand. I was able to try on all the colors I saw online and try on the size up. I’m a size 9 and my European size is typically size 39.9. These shoes don’t come in half sizes so I got mine in a 39 and at first, they seemed a touch snug in the toe area. They’ve since worn in perfectly but I wanted to try on the size 40 in store. The 40’s felt a touch big but not ‘too big’ so if another color/style pops up for a killer deal, I would go with either a 39 or a 40. Another thing I noticed at the store yesterday is that there are some near perfect dupes by other brands at a lower price point. The leopard print ones I’ve shown below are the ones I really loved and would absolutely purchase.

I’m all about wearing Adidas Stan Smiths for more polished sporty outfits, but what I was searching for was a proper fashion shoe/sneaker hybrid. I also wondered if they were worth their price at all when you could get that laid back, fashiony look by wearing black and white Adidas Stan Smith or Vans Old Skool, or Nike Roshe or Cortez.  I think if you already find luxury shoes a worthy purchase then you will appreciate the craftsmanship in these shoes and the fit details. If luxury shoes aren’t for you and you don’t like spending a lot of money on shoes then there are some really great alternatives that give you the exact same look as Golden Goose and you don’t have to commit to something that may be a short-lived trend. Personally, I love luxury shoes but have always reserved that type of purchase for really dressy special occasion shoes. I think it makes more sense to spend that money on a shoe you will wear daily and in a multitude of outfits and that fits your everyday lifestyle vs getting something you will only get to enjoy once in a while.

What are your thoughts on luxury shoes? Do you prefer to spend that higher price point on things that don’t get trashed like handbags or jewelry, or are you into it? What about luxury sneakers?

The Lululemon Upload is live! Last weeks posts: Lululemon CEO Resigned, Lululemon Upload, Valentines Day Guide  Stride Jacket II is Back!

Sorry for the half written upload post this afternoon. For some reason the upload happened really late and I had several appointments booked for after school so I was able to zip back home and do a bit of it for half an hour, and then I had to go again. Luckily there wasn’t anything I would have been hugely upset to miss out on, but I did order the Time To Sweat Short Sleeve in Heathered Merlot. That was the item that jumped out at me most so I opted to give it a try. I sized up though because the description says it’s a slim-fit tee, and I’m not about the slim-fit these days. Heathered rulu light though in a pink tone is right up my ally. I was also interested in the Wild Twist 7/8 Tight but I need to see it on various body types to see what that line pattern does.

Did you guys order anything? Try anything on over the weekend?

Editors Guide: Treat Yo Self Valentines Day Guide

by Cristina February 9, 2018
written by Cristina

This is the official Treat Yo Self Valentines Day Guide! I firmly believe that before you take care of anyone else, you must take care of yourself first. If you feel good, you make others feel good. It’s a lot of fun creating a themed editors guide to Valentines Day but the reality is we don’t really celebrate it by exchanging gifts with each other, and never have. Our Valentines Day is more about having a special date at home with each other after a day of focusing on the kids and getting their cupcakes and cookies and valentines day cards out the door for school.  We did a date night ‘out’ last week and so on Valentines Day we will probably have dinner in, a movie and a nice bottle of wine. I’ll definitely have a workout that day to ‘make up’ for the wine that will be had later.

What are your plans for Valentines Day. If you are single, do you treat yourself and make yourself feel special? I hope so! I do this for birthdays too.
