It’s Lululemon Upload Time

It’s Lululemon Upload Time!

Why no Tuck & Flow? Sheesh! Nothing for me today but I am liking the Pick Your Path Jacket. I think it’s a really thicker spacer fabric and not the thin stretchy spacer fabric that I prefer. I definitely want to try it on though. The Cadet Dance Studio Jacket is another item I’m really liking. A couple of new shoes this upload too. Check out these Manhattan Sneakers!

Trend Spotting! Fall 2018’s Biggest Fashion Trend Animal Print

by Cristina September 4, 2018
written by Cristina

Fall 2018’s Biggest Fashion Trend Animal Print! I’ve started a fun new feature called Trend Spotting and in my first installment, I’m covering the biggest trend for fall, animal print! I’m going to cover each trend for Fall/Winter 2018/19 and show you how to wear these trends in your activewear and your day to day style.

On the runways, we’ve seen all sorts of animal print from snakeskin to zebra, and in all sorts of wild neon colors as well. The biggest expression of this trend though (and the one I like the most) is the classic leopard print which has translated so seamlessly to luxury activewear. Leopard print is considered a neutral by a lot of stylists because the camel and black within the print play so well with so many other colors. It absolutely is a bold print, but as far as prints are concerned, this is a versatile neutral print and one worth investing in. I just love the attitude of a good cheetah print in the gym.

Back in the spring, I fell in love with these amazing leopard print sneakers, which I planned on getting on a trip to the US. By the time I got to try a pair on, they were completely sold out across all retailers. Today I saw the great news that because this trend was so huge on the runway, they fully restocked these beauties. I’m adding them to my wishlist right now because this is the top way I want to wear this trend. I have a pair of espadrilles in leopard print that I got over the summer and they’ve been so versatile, and so fun to wear. Here is a tamer version of leopard print sneakers if you wanted something a little more subtle.

Do you like leopard print or other animal prints? how do you plan on wearing this trend this season?

Lululemon Leggings Available in Plus Size

by Cristina September 1, 2018
written by Cristina

Such great news! Lululemon Leggings Available in Plus Size now! Here are all of the Lululemon items currently available in size 14. Lululemon has been flirting with size 14 over the past few months with the occasional size 14 black Lululemon legging. The size has frustratingly been constantly out of stock. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been seeing more and more core items being stocked on upload in size 14. A jacket even comes in size 14 now! I was so excited to see the recent upload of the new Rain Rules Jacket and Incognito Camo Scuba Hoodie.

Shop Lululemon Plus Size Items

Back in the day…

Lululemon used to offer size 14 back pre-2011 when I started blogging but the size was quickly eliminated, and size 12’s were reduced to just a few units and hidden away. This is a long overdue step forward for Lulemon in inclusivity. Lululemon has always been seen as a more elitist aspirational brand with a specific body type showcased on their website, and in their ambassador community. The truth is the majority of women fall on the outskirts of Lululemon’s size chart, either petite or plus size, or curvy petite proportions.

Limiting their size ranges in favor of such a narrow aesthetic has always been a self-limiting business decision. The female athlete comes in all shapes and sizes and if brands want to be seen as THE technical athletic apparel brand to go to,  and not just a yoga brand, this step is necessary.  It’s economical to have a narrower size run, and that is why larger sizes and petite sizes are ignored by smaller retailers. With Lululemon beating estimates quarter after quarter, there is no excuse now. I know I want to see this body acceptance from Lululemon.

I have floated between size 8-12 in Lululemon but I have always felt like I’m not their ‘ideal’ customer despite the fact that I consider myself an athlete. I have run multiple half marathons including Seawheeze 3 times, I have crossfitted 5 days a week, I Olympic Weightlift and I’ve done yoga, all wearing Lululemon. I have never looked like Ocean. In fact, there are no Oceans at my gym. As a blogger that covers Lululemon, I’ve always felt like more of a nuisance to their image. Do we have to excuse ourselves as ‘at the start of my weight loss journey’ to be accepted into an activewear store?

The New Standard In Activewear

Lululemon is unfortunately not trailblazing in this market space for activewear. Nike has a plus size offering with a full plus size range which debut in March of last year. Nike has 81 items available in women’s plus size, with its own dedicated section on their website. Underarmour sizing goes to XXL for women, Adidas goes from 2x Small to 2XL. Smaller niche brands like Carbon38 go to XL, and K-Deer goes to 4XL

I hope starting with the core items in size 14 is just the beginning for Lululemon, and that they will have a more inclusive size run with the success of these items. As a result of the high demand for size 14, the size is selling out each upload. 14 is just the beginning of the plus size activewear size range. I hope they will also have a petite range too! Lululemon currently has an ‘Asia Fit‘ range for their Asian market.

Lululemon should embrace plus sized athletes in their marketing efforts and look to Serena Williams as an example. We need to see muscular, athletic, petite, curvy petite, plus size, tall and short women included on their website and especially within their ambassador community. I want to see size 14 models showing those size 14 items. It just feels better as a consumer when the size you are buying is being represented somewhere on the site, even if it’s not specifically the item you are purchasing.

I was so pleased to see that the Sweaty Betty merino joggers I’ve been coveting come in short and tall versions. I reviewed the regular length here but I want the short ones which is why I didn’t buy them during the NSALE. I’m so used to making due with pants that are too long, or cropped pants that fit like pants that I don’t even look for short length. It feels so exciting when something you try on fits you just right.

What do you guys think?

Lululemon Review: The Rain Is Calling Jacket II, Incognito Camo Multi Grey

by Cristina August 31, 2018
written by Cristina

My The Rain Is Calling Jacket II Incognito Camo Multi Grey just arrived! Happy day!

First off, I wanted to give you guys a heads up that Nordstrom is currently having a big sale (again!). This time the discounts are greater, and almost all of the items that were on sale during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale are now further reduced. They are calling it a ‘Summer Sale’ and everything is 40% off. This summer sale is actually all the ‘fall items’ from the NSALE so that’s a little strange. Anyways, if you can, repurchase your items at the lower price. If you guys didn’t participate during the NSALE maybe these prices will be more enticing to you. Read all my NSALE posts here to see what I reviewed or check out the gallery for all the fall items that are now on sale. In this post I am wearing this sweater from the sale, and these jeans.

Overall Fit

I sized up in the Rain Is Calling Jacket because I primarily will wear it layered over thicker sweaters in the fall, which is what I chose here for this review. I’m really glad I sized up and I think if I had stayed TTS it would have fit, but it would have clung around my hip area. If you normally plan on wearing this for running, a snugger fit is fine since you don’t want to dress too warmly for runs, but for street wear you will probably want to size up.

Design

I was a bit hesitant on the design of the back flap since on the web photo the back flap protrudes a bit. This is a great design feature because it adds an extra layer of rain protection on your shoulders and upper back, but I don’t love the look of that on trenches or run jackets. I was really happy the back flap was much more subtle in person and laid flat. This jacket is fully waterproof and the zipper is seam sealed. The seam seal feature on the zipper makes it a bit sticky to zip up and down, but it’s a feature you will be thankful for in a downpour.

Is It Worth It?

Is it worth it? I think it’s been a really long time since Lululemon has put out a great jacket with prints and color options, especially in always popular camo so for that reason I’m very inclined to keep this one. It’s fully waterproof which is a bonus but I do think this is one of Lululemon’s priciest run jackets at $198.

Beauty Gurus: Youtube Beauty Community Drama

by Cristina August 31, 2018
written by Cristina

Beauty Guru Drama

Have you been following the Youtube Beauty Community Drama? If you are a regular youtube watcher it’s inescapable. It’s hit mainstream webzine articles like vox and Seventeen and Cosmopolitan at this point with infographics showing a timeline and key players of who trashed who, and the fallout. There are massive Reddit and forum threads discussing this and it’s taken over the internet over the past two weeks. I don’t watch the key players that ignited this all, but many of the makeup artists I do follow have been talking about this and the greater picture of the beauty community and how it’s been affected.

One thing I’ve learned over the years as a blogger is that consumers of influencer content are predominantly influencers themselves, so this is why the ‘drama’ has turned into such a vacuum with story after story with titles such as ‘my truth’ being published, and why the minor curfuffle between personalities has turned into a huge industry reckoning. I think there is a sven diagram that shows if you own and collect multiple eyeshadow pallets, and have an internet connection then those two realities overlap with the reality that you know all about this youtube beauty community drama already. Most of you probably don’t care and I fully expect you to gloss over this silliness but some of you are avid followers of the beauty community so I wanted to bring it up and open up the discussion, especially since it brings up the concept  of contextual marketing campaigns which we are all exposed to, and in this case what I think is very clever gorilla marketing.

Youtube Beauty Community Drama Synopsis

I’ll get into the rundown of what started this dumpster fire of a situation but the consequences of it to the community is much more interesting to me as someone that dabbles in monetizing content. This has called into question the integrity of the influencer industry, including makeup brands PR teams and agencies representing influencers. It has undermined ALL Beauty sponsorships as a result. This was a kamikaze mission either accidentally, or by design from some greater powers that be. I am inclined to think this is some sort of stunt somewhere up the flagpole since I’ve become very cynical about brands and marketing. I think all these content creators are just unwittingly taking part in this Greek comedy, and some of them are biting it real hard in terms of lost viewers and their own brands being damaged. Just remember, these are very young people running very lucrative businesses in a NEW industry, liaising with very sophisticated brands.

Beauty Influencer Drama

The Guru Falling Out That Started It All

Jeffree is the big honcho of the beauty guru world. If you think of the beauty guru world as the mafia, Jeffree is the godfather. He has the largest following of all the beauty gurus, owns his makeup brand and various subsidiaries (which some gurus depend on), is a multi-millionaire and he has the power to bless an up and coming influencer with his sway in the cosmetics industry or curse them. Jeffrey is forever in a feud with someone and his most notable ones have been with his former friend Kat Von D,  Too Faced Cosmetics and Jaclyn Hill. Jeffrey has had a ton of controversy surrounding him when he was exposed as a racist with racist tweets being resurfaced. Somehow he’s Teflon though and after his video apology, it was generally accepted in the community that he’s made amends and learned from his mistakes. It seems to be in the communities best interest to protect the grand pumba. This goes so deep that a makeup artist I do follow on youtube, Wayne Goss, posted a video alleging that he is being blackmailed for reviewing or promoting a Kat Von D eyeliner.

Jeffree Star had a clique of influencers he was friends with, including Laura Lee, Gabriel Zamora, Manny MUA, and Nikita Dragun. During this time, another YouTuber called Shane Dawson created a 3 part ‘documentary’ on the real Jeffree Star showing him as a real and likable person, at the same time as showing off his wealth and how he has gone from rags to riches. It’s a very inspiring story for anyone grasping for this kind of self-made celebrity. The perfect PR project!

This clique that Jeffree was part of allegedly received great benefits from their friendship with him and as a result they all landed their own cosmetics and merch deals, which Jefree generously facilitated. Once these deals were all made, the group; Laura Lee, Gabriel Zamora, Many MUA and Nikita Dragun decided to theatrically ditch Jeffree, calling him out as a racist and putting out a series of shady tweets about him.  Tweets where deleted, sobbing apologies where made, and then old incriminating tweets from these influencers with their own racist’s pasts came to the surface imploding their careers.  These YouTubers hemorrhaged followers and lost brand deals and had their makeup brands pulled from Ulta and Sephora. The one that seems to have faired the absolute worst is Laura Lee who has lost 500, 000 subscribers which amounts to an alleged $60,000/year loss.

The Unintended Consequences

These are all Youtubers I do not follow, but the funny thing is is that the few influencers I do follow and respect have thrown their hats into the ring turning this into an issue about the industry as a whole, how influencers get paid, how divas and personalities have ruined the gig and turned it into ‘all about the money’. Nobody is ‘naming names’ but it’s very clear that the community is siding with Jeffree and saying that a few bad apples spoil the bunch. The interesting angle to this story is that there are a few YouTubers that have agendas as their own makeup brands have created an income stream greater than their youtube channels, so they have started to throw shade on brand deals.

Another interesting thing to note is that a lot of these voices are represented by the same agencies, and get the same product sponsorships and trips (check out the NARS trip to Ibiza as an example). It’s all a very incestuous community once you start peeling back the layers to see who is represented by whom, and what friendships are actually brand alignments.  Marlena, founder of the brand Makeup Geek (and originally a YouTuber) threw an atomic bomb of a comment when she said in her video that some influencers demand $60,000 per video mentioning a product, and it was further divulged that some big beauty brands will pay influencers premium dollar for negative reviews to be made for competing brands.

What Do You Guys Think?

A lot of insiders are talking about how this rift reflects so badly on the youtube beauty guru community and how the beauty community is dying. Those of you that are avid followers of any youtube makeup artist, personality, a follower of beauty groups, boards and forums, what do you think of it all?  Do you wonder about your own participation in this cycle of consumer/brand/personality? How much do Beauty Influencers really influence you to shop?

As a blogger, I want to add that the biggest winners in all of this, drama or no drama, are the big brands. They make huge profits via the marketing efforts of influencers, and brands can easily undermine those influencers earnings and still reap the benefits of a hyped up product. The influencer market is saturated so when one career implodes, there is another influencer ready to take the place.  Make no mistake that the brands are always, always fully in control and they have sophisticated teams of people negotiating, playing and analyzing each and every partnership. It’s a perfect scenario because if you are an up and coming influence, you want to stay on the right side of those PR lists.

Beauty Guru Brand Collabs + Beauty Guru Brands

[show_lookbook_widget id=”400323″]

In creating this list of Beauty Guru Brands and Brand Collabs I was really surprised at how many influencer brands there are here that have been around for years that we now view as a bonafide cosmetics brand and not some side hustle of a beauty guru.

Serena Williams Catsuit Drama

Serena Williams Catsuit

by Cristina August 29, 2018
written by Cristina

Serena Williams Catsuit Controversy

Have you guys been following the Serena Williams Catsuit drama? In the latest French Open held in May, Serena wore this all black Nike compression catsuit. I loved this look and even used the image on my Instagram because 1. it was fierce 2. it showed off her athletic and curvy body in a way that made me feel inspired to own my own shape. I especially feel inspired by how her postpartum athleticism is being celebrated by her.

The French Tennis Federation president, however, took exception to Serena Williams Catsuit look and they have decided to introduce a dress code to regulate the uniforms of players. Bernard Giudicelli, the French Tennis Federation president singled out Serena Williams catsuit as an example of how ‘it’s gone too far’.

“It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place.”

Bernard Giudicelli

Serena Williams has explained that her catsuits actually have a practical purpose for her in that they prevent blood clots after experiencing a pulmonary embolism after the birth of her daughter. As someone who has had a mild blood clot in my own leg (and both my parents have had blood clots in their legs with airplane travel) I have three sets of prescription grade compression stockings which I use when I travel. I have my prescription strength ones, and I have multiple sports ones. I even have two pairs of very old Lululemon compression socks. I’ve had surgery to remove a vein in my leg which had a faulty valve that contributed to varicose veins. My main concern with removing the faulty vein was preventing clots from forming, and that was secondary to my concern about how my varicose veins looked. So I immediately ‘got it’ when Serena explained the reason for her choice. I had wondered why she wore something so warm and restrictive.

Did you know that women can be prone to blood clots and embolisms as a result of estrogen, and hormonal contraceptives? If you have other factors at play such as high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation or smoking, your already increased risk increases even more substantially.

What do you think of the French Tennis Federation singling out Serena Williams outfit as an example as to why they are introducing a dress code?

US Open Double Standard?

Serena Williams Catsuit

At the US Open, France’s Alizé Cornet was just issued a court violation for the infraction of quickly changing her shirt which she had accidentally put on backward despite the fact that she was wearing a sports bra underneath.

Later in the day, Novak Djokovic sat shirtless for a prolonged period, without penalty.

The US Open announced they are changing the policy and will allow players to change their shirts when sitting in the player chair.

“We regret that a code violation was assessed to Ms. Cornet yesterday, We have clarified the policy to ensure this will not happen moving forward.”

“Female players, if they choose, may also change their shirts in a more private location close to the court, when available. They will not be assessed a bathroom break in this circumstance.”

The US Open

What do you guys think about how women are treated in professional sports? Is there a double standard? Is it sexism? Is it especially brutal towards women of color?

The Upload! Lululemon Drops

by Cristina August 28, 2018
written by Cristina

Lululemon Drops! The new products are live! This is a fantastically huge upload with the Rain Is Calling Jacket III in camo which has been anxiously awaited ever since we saw it uploaded on the foreign sites a few weeks ago. The Scuba Crew in Camo is another item that readers have been stalking ever since Ms. K shared it on The Sweat Edit facebook group last week. I also did a fit review this past weekend with some of these items so if you missed it, check it out here. I did a review of the Rest Less 1/2 Zip.

Have you noticed my page is loading slowly? I have. I know it’s super annoying and I just wanted to let you know I’m on it. I have a web developer keyed up to help me but it’s a pricey ordeal (I have to do a lot of work on the back end + upgrade my server) so that will happen in the near future, but in the meantime I wanted to let you know that I so appreciate you sticking with me even though slow loading pages are the most annoying thing. I tried fixing it myself the other night and I ended up breaking my site completely and needing help getting it back up and running. Not fun times! If you tried to access my site on Sunday night and it was down, that was why.

Lululemon Dressing Room Try-Ons

by Cristina August 26, 2018
written by Cristina

I managed to steal away from home today to do some Lululemon Dressing Room Try-Ons of all the newest pieces that dropped. On Tuesday’s upload, I ordered the On The Fly Pant and Scuba Hoodie in the incognito print, but since we’ve been away and I had my package sent to my mom’s house I didn’t get to try them on yet at home. My closest store actually didn’t have any of these items in, and the 20 Year Lululemon Manifesto pieces where completely sold out. Actually, the 20 Year Lululemon Manifesto Wunder Unders were sold out online and in stores by Thursday.

On The Fly Pant, Incognito Camo

I have an older pair of On The Fly Pants in my TTS and wasn’t sure what size to get in this camo version, so I opted to size up in the ones I ordered. I think I’m glad I did. The store I went to today only had my TTS and I think they look fine but I prefer a looser fit around the butt area. I know most people find the On The Fly Pants to be a relaxed TTS, to a size down for some but for me, I’ve got a big butt and long inseam so they just look a bit better size up.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with these since they are camo and could possibly look very tacky, but actually, I found them really chic. The camo is nicely subtle and neutral so you just get a hint of the pattern in the light. I highly recommend these. They actually reminded me of how much I love my On The Fly Pants so I’m going to pull mine out and make an effort to wear them more often.

This is another item that the store only had in a few sizes. They had my size down, and a size up. I actually typically size up in the Rest Less 1/2 Zip anyways because they are so form fitting. Last years version was an especially bad fit. For some reason, last years design was cut shorter and boxier and had much less stretch. This version is a much nicer fit and I loved it on, especially in this stunner of a color. Those of you with long torsos and arms you will be very happy with this fit. This is probably a TTS but if you are like me and don’t like the cling, you can safely size up as well.

Scuba Hoodie Incognito Camo

I really wanted to hate this scuba hoodie but I love it! The fit in my TTS was great and very flattering. It’s actually been years since I’ve purchased a scuba because the fit is all over the map depending on the colors or prints. I have some in a size 8, size 10 and size 12. Unfortunately, I ordered this in a size up expecting that it would be a snug fit but I tried my TTS in store and it’s actually a great fit. It’s very soft and stretchy and the perfect length. I found the fit of this one so flattering compared to the ones I have at home, and again I love the camo. Highly recommend this if you love camo too. The camo items are going fast in-store and online.

Huddle And Hustle Hoodie

I HATED this hoodie on. On the rack and online it looks so cute. I love a thin cotton terry hoodie and I always try them on. This one is really soft and has that nice nubby cotton terry material on the inside, and it comes in great colors. It looked so bad on me and I couldn’t wait to take it off.  My TTS 10 was too big in the chest and looked boxy. Something about the seam design across the front was really unflattering to my shape and created a lot of width.
