The Best Minimalist White Sneaker | Veja Esplar

by Cristina March 7, 2019
written by Cristina

Have you seen these white minimalist sneakers with the V logo floating all over fashion world Instagram accounts? They are called Veja sneakers. I’ve been watching them for a while and have been wanting to give them a try. As you know I am no minimalist, but I love a sneaker that I can wear with a casual outfit, or that I can wear with a dressier outfit to make it casual. The minimalist white sneaker is the key to closet versatility. These look as amazing with my Lululemon Align Pants and Scuba Hoodie as they do with my jeans and wool coat or blazer. You know these are cool-girl shoes when you can find them at Shopbop, Revolve, Madewell, Nordstrom, Anthropoligie.

Veja Esplar Sneaker

About Veja

Before I get into the style points about this sneaker, I wanted to mention how good this company is and why I feel so good about this purchase. Veja is a French company that produces these shoes ethically and sustainably.

These guys are an environmentally friendly and fair trade company, and all the materials are sourced in Brazil. Veja works directly with their producers and uses wild rubber for the soles and logo (fights against deforestation), well-sourced leather (low chemical tanning, traceable leather, minimal water usage in treatment), inner lining is made of recycled plastics, vegan shoe options.

Basically, from start to finish the brand has paid attention to reducing the effects of fast fashion waste and pollution. Additionally, their factory workers in Brazil have good working and living conditions, ILO rules are followed and 80% of the workers are unionized. By the way, the pair I have are called the ESPLARS which are named after Brazilian NGO that brings technical support to organic cotton farming families

Veja Esplar Sneaker

The Look

Stylistically, these shoes are exactly what I’ve been looking for. I love that they are high quality leather, lower at the ankle and are mainly white with just a bit of understated contrast. My first pair had to be the white with black contrast but there are so many other pairs that have caught my eye. I’d love an all-white pair, or the V-10’s with the blue and red trim, or the Gucci like red and green contrast. I also may have purchased a second pair off Madewell that has little embroidered flowers which were on clearance.

But They Must Be Expensive…

The price point on these is another fantastic feature. They range in price from $85 (my sale pair from Madewell -this Star pair is on sale too!) to $150. I had been considering getting a pair of Gucci Ace sneakers for a while but despite having saved up for them I’ve not been able to pull the trigger. These are the same elegant look but way more understated and a far better value.

How the Veja Esplars Fit

These Esplars do take a little bit of breaking in, but only a few wears. They are high-quality structured leather so they need a bit of time to mold to your foot. The only part that was uncomfortable at first was the tongue which is a little high, and very stiff. This makes the tongue cut into my ankle a bit which you can see in my photo below.

If you are wearing socks that come up underneath the tongue it’s fine, but if the tongue sits on your skin it tends to dig in as you walk. Once I wore them three times with socks, the tongue was broken in enough that I can now wear them without socks. That leather just needs to soften a bit.

Comfort Level

The sneakers are pretty flat and there is not much cushion for those of you that like arch support. You get a fair bit of shock absorption from the rubber soles though and that’s all I need. The soles feel the same as vans or converse so if those are good all day shoes for you, these will be just fine.

Sizing

Sizing wise these are a bit tricky. They are unisex and European sizing. I am a size 9 and I took a size 40 which was the correct size and they fit perfect. Look at the sizing chart for your true size because European sizing is different from Italian shoe sizing. For me, I take a 39 – 39.5 in Italian shoes, but a size 40 in European shoe sizes. It all depends on the manufacturer

You can see here how the tongue sits a bit high at first.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a great fashionable sneaker, get these. You can’t beat the price. There are so many color options and combinations and they look so fantastic. They are better than the ubiquitous Adidas, and not as in your face as Gucci. They are exactly the right style statement. PLUS, you are contributing to a company that is making huge efforts to create a sustainable, ethically produced product in a fast fashion world.

If you’ve read my review on Golden Goose sneakers you are probably wondering how they compare. Because I got my GG’s second hand and I was trying to find the lowest price possible (because they are $$$), I was limited on color choice. I still love them and especially really love the hidden wedge. If I had my pick for those though I would go with a more fun color/print combination, or a white with bright pink contrast, as those shoes lean towards a maximalist style, whereas the Vejas beauty is in its minimalistic simplicity. I love them both for different reasons.

The Lululemon Upload is live! So far I’ve ordered the Noir Crop in both colors. I’ve always loved the look of the Noir Pant but they are way too long and overwhelming on me and these crops seem like the perfect pant to wear in the summer with tall wedge sandals, flat sandals or sneakers. I sized up in them because I remember the waist being very snug in the pants. Speaking of sneakers, I have a new pair that I’m absolutely in love with. I hope to have a review up for you very soon. Here is a sneak peek of them if you are curious. I think they would be perfect with these crops.

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

by Cristina March 3, 2019
written by Cristina

Back in January, I purchased a new hair tool that I’d been hearing about everywhere. It was all over facebook in my beauty and fashion groups and all over youtube. You may remember my Amika Hair Straightener purchase from 2017. I still really love that tool but this new gadget intrigued me and I caved to the hype. Because its a drugstore brand hair tool and not a steep investment, I was willing to try it out to see what all the fuss was about.

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

I’ve been using the Revlon On Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer for a month now, several times a week. Spoiler! This is such a great hair styler, especially for the money. I love it. The hype is justified.

Thinking about the Dyson?

If you have been thinking about trying the Dyson Airwrap Styler for $649, try this one first. It will give you a sense of whether or not this type of styling tool makes sense for you and if it’s worth investing in a much higher price tag version. I love this type of styler but I’m happy enough with my Revlon that I don’t feel tempted to upgrade to a Dyson. There are some features on the Dyson that the Revlon is missing (heat control, precision, and speed), but if you are not super serious about hair and not looking to spend a fortune, the Revlon is a great option.

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

I love that the Revlon can get a great blow out without me having to navigate two tools. I’ve never been coordinated enough to get my entire head with a brush and blow dryer. I end up with lopsided volume, and usually flat at the back where I can’t see or reach. This makes it so much easier to get to those hard angles which you really need for a good blowout. The oblong shape of the brush is great for giving you a nice natural lifted look without a dramatic scoop under which I sometimes get with my round brush.

This styler cuts down on my drying time to about 15 minutes from damp to dry. That’s a huge time saver for me. I love how smooth and shiny my hair is after and that I can get a good lift at the roots. The shine is thanks to the boar bristles, ceramic coating and ion technology which really cuts down on frizz and flyaways. I’m actually really surprised that after a months use, I don’t have a ton of hair stuck in this brush. I was a bit worried that it would tug at my hair but I’m getting much less fall out and shedding.

The settings at the bottom of the handle are great too. I usually find with blow dryers that have on/of switches near the top that I tend to accidentally turn them off. This has a turning switch at the bottom so my hand is well away from it. I also find the handle nicely balanced with the weight of the motor at the bottom.

The Negative

My one negative with this is that it only has three heat settings and no temperature indicated. The hottest setting is very hot and I’m sure it’s near 400*. Heat styling over 400* is hair damage territory if you do not use a heat protector. I make a point of spraying my hair with heat spray every time so I haven’t experienced any damage, but I can tell that it’s very possible if you are not careful. I use Living Proof Blowout Spray which also helps to style. my hair

Have you tried the Revlon One Step Volumizer Hair Dryer?

Cozy Oversized Knit Sweaters

by Cristina February 26, 2019
written by Cristina

It has been so cold in Vancouver lately that I’ve been living in my Cozy Oversized Knit Sweaters. I’ve been spring shopping in anticipation of better weather (remember my Cami NYC purchases?). Today I found these amazing cozy oversized knits on markdown and clearance at Roots. I wanted to share because even though we are officially in Spring fashion season, the actual season is still winter. There are great winter markdowns to be found!

I always forget to shop at Roots even though I love a lot of their loungewear and casual wear. I never think of Roots for classic basics like knit sweaters but they are a definite go to for lounge.

I was in heaven today when I walked in to their stand-alone store and found all of these merino wool, wool/alpaca and cashmere blend sweaters on markdown. I used to hate wool and find it itchy but lately I really gravitate to wool, as long as it’s in oversized form. It’s also just better ecologically to invest in good quality natural materials. That way if they eventually end up in a landfill after years of wear, they will actually decompose.

I’m sad to report only a few of these sweaters are still available online. But there are several other styles online that I didn’t see in store and I am tempted to order. My #1 favorite sweater which is the first one I’m showing you is still online.

Retro Luxury Sport

My favorite find today is this retro sport striped sweater. It actually caught my attention a few weeks ago from a local blogger who was wearing it. I had no idea it was Roots . I assumed she was wearing some high end hard to find sweater and I didn’t even bother trying to find out price. I wasn’t about to spend a fortune on a sweater knit at the end of winter even if I loved it. I really admired the sporty blue and red stripe motif which reminds me of French racquetball in the ’70s for some reason. My dad played racquetball when I was a kid and I’m sure he had tube socks with this stripe, and matching short shorts.

As soon as I spotted it in store today I knew I was buying it. It’s 45% wool, 35% nylon and 20% alpaca. Those of you sensitive to wool will find this one mildly itchy but also very soft. I’ve been wearing it all day without a tank or shirt underneath and so far I don’t want to take it off. the care tag says it’s dry clean only but I plan to wash it on delicate with a lingerie detergent and no spin, and then I’ll lay it flat to dry. Should be fine, I’ve washed alpaca knits before.

Graphic Logo Knits

If you’ve been admiring the oh so pricey Instagram favorite Bella Freud 1970 Jumper, look no further. Roots has this 1973 sweater which I hear was also a very good year. The Bella Freud version is made of wool, so those of you sensitive to wool will be happy to know this Roots sweater is 100% cotton. I grabbed this one too. I think it will look great with jeans. It’s a pretty great dupe and has the exact same high contrast graphic impact. It was a great price too at $34.

Bella Freud 1970 Sweater Dupe
Roots 1973 Skeena Sweater

Ski Lodge

I really loved the look of this dark navy sweater. The rustic knit embroidery detail at the neckline is so perfect. I wanted to purchase this one but there was definitely more itch than the first one I showed you and I know I won’t reach for it. It also wasn’t enough of an oversized slouchy fit in my TTS. I may still consider it at a later date in a bigger size if the bigger size makes it less itchy.

Cozy Basic Cashmere

These two sweaters where a cashmere/alpaca blend and OMG where they ever soft. These where the softest sweaters of the day and I was so tempted to get them. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking not getting one of these other than I was probably trying to show a little bit of restraint.

The Lululemon Upload

by Cristina February 19, 2019
written by Cristina

The Lululemon Upload is live! Let’s celebrate Karl Lagerfeld today by wearing our athleisure, hair scrunchies and Chanel handbags in his honour.

I purchased the Fast & Free Tights in the new Evergreen Camo Green Multi Print. I’m not 100% certain I will keep them (probably 95% sure) but I love the look of them online and camo prints always sell out super fast online. Last weeks Incognito Camo Fast & Frees sold out by the next day. I do like the more classic Incognito Camo print better but these are a solid contender. Nothing else calling my name today. Anything strike your fancy enough to purchase or consider?

Fast & Free Tight

I ordered these because just like Chanel handbags, Lululemon camo prints are a great investment.

RIP Karl Lagerfeld

In case any of you are not following fashion news, Karl Lagerfeld, creative director at Chanel has died. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer according to reports. It was not widely known that he was sick and from all accounts, it was a very quickly progressing cancer. The fashion community was left confused when he did not appear at Chanel’s runway show at Paris Fashion week late last month.

CAMI NYC Review

by Cristina February 12, 2019
written by Cristina

Since my Cami NYC purchases from last week are on sale I wanted to get a quick post up giving you my first impressions. I’ll do a propper try-on post later on but wanted to let you know the fit. They are perfect and exactly what I wanted for pairing with blazers, oversized sweaters, cardigans and Lululemon Wraps. This is a spendy item but it’s a high quality, timeless versatile piece so I don’t mind spending a bit more for items like this. This fits into my classic style wardrobes basics list.

Fit

I purchased both of these in a size large. That was all they had, but had size XL been available for sale I would have picked that up instead. I’m a size 10 in Lululemon generally, but with items like this that don’t have a ton of stretch, I would size up to a 12. The CAMI NYC site goes xxs to xl. I didn’t love the print options for size XL on markdown on their own site.

The fit is good, still nice and flowy and roomy at the waist thanks to the a-line and bias cut. This allows me to wear these with jeans without showing a muffin top thanks to the bias cut. It has such a beautiful drape. The neckline is surprisingly modest because it goes up a little higher and completely covers my bra. I also really like that the racerback is cut higher.

I’m self-conscious about my bigger lats and so I’m always happy when a tank is cut high enough that it covers this area. The one negative is that this tank will show your bra straps thanks to the spaghetti strap so even if you wear a racerback bra, you will see the straps. Your options are to wear your bra despite the straps showing (I don’t mind this if it’s a nice bra), wear a strapless bra or go braless.

The one area where I would have preferred the XL over the L is in the upper back. It doesn’t feel tight at all, but the material wants to fold a little bit across my bra band. Silk has 20% stretch so I am sure the fold is just a temporary thing as the material relaxes to my shape. I’m currently up a bit in weight so I think this size would have been 100% right at my usual weight, and I hope it will fit perfectly once I’ve dropped the winter extras.

Style/Cut

As you can see, I purchased two different styles. One is the racerback charmeuse style and the other is the cadence style with regular straps. I thought I would prefer the cut of the regular straps but actually, I like them both. I think the racerback is a little more modest in the back because it comes up higher at the arms.

These tanks are 100% quality silk so they do require dry cleaning. I’ve washed silk tanks at home before very carefully and they’ve been fine but I wouldn’t risk it with these. The luster of the sapphire charmeuse silk is so beautiful that it would be a shame to lose that. Since I’m doing a lot of thrifting lately for myself and for my Poshmark store, I spend a lot of time at the dry cleaners already so I don’t mind the higher maintenance laundering.

I love these tanks so much that I can definitely see myself buying more as they go on end of season markdown. The full price is just a little high for me but catching them marked down puts them on par with a couple of Lululemon cool racerbacks or a swiftly tech LS.

CAMI NYC The Cadence Cami

Sezane Cardigan

I specifically purchased the sapphire cami to go with this amazing Sezane Cardigan that I thrifted a few weeks ago. This is my favorite thrift pickup so far and I initially grabbed it to sell on my poshmark closet.  I ended up keeping it for myself though. It’s a medium but fits perfectly. I still can’t believe I found something so beautiful in a brand I’ve been wanting to try for so long. I’ve worn it a lot so far with a plain tee shirt underneath but it really needed a pretty feminine cami

The Lululemon Upload is here, and also, the polar vortex has reached Vancouver! It’s officially a snow day today which means online shopping is extra tempting. Spring-like items are also especially tempting. Proceed with caution, or continue with reckless abandon, let your budget be your guide.

No purchases for me today, but I have made several non Lulu purchases in the last little while that I’ll be sharing with you soon (this tank, and these jeans). The tanks arrived and I love them, but because of the snow delays, my jeans haven’t arrived yet. I also managed to find the Camo Fast & Free Tights at my store last week.

The Lululemon Upload is live! Nothing for me today because I did a little middle of the night shopping last night for wardrobe staples. I purchased these Mother Jeans on sale and these ones. And then… I purchased this cami and this one which I had been wanting for a long time (it’s camo for you camo lovers!). Finally, I caught them on sale. The camis will pare so well with all of my cardigans and sweaters, or with tops that are a little too low cut.

Sadly no Camo Fast & Frees where uploaded today. Those are something I know a lot of you have been waiting for, and they were the first thing I looked for on this upload. Rumour has it that local stores had a new shipment in but they got cleaned out of all of them within a few days.
