CAMI NYC Review

by Cristina

Since my Cami NYC purchases from last week are on sale I wanted to get a quick post up giving you my first impressions. I’ll do a propper try-on post later on but wanted to let you know the fit. They are perfect and exactly what I wanted for pairing with blazers, oversized sweaters, cardigans and Lululemon Wraps. This is a spendy item but it’s a high quality, timeless versatile piece so I don’t mind spending a bit more for items like this. This fits into my classic style wardrobes basics list.

Fit

I purchased both of these in a size large. That was all they had, but had size XL been available for sale I would have picked that up instead. I’m a size 10 in Lululemon generally, but with items like this that don’t have a ton of stretch, I would size up to a 12. The CAMI NYC site goes xxs to xl. I didn’t love the print options for size XL on markdown on their own site.

The fit is good, still nice and flowy and roomy at the waist thanks to the a-line and bias cut. This allows me to wear these with jeans without showing a muffin top thanks to the bias cut. It has such a beautiful drape. The neckline is surprisingly modest because it goes up a little higher and completely covers my bra. I also really like that the racerback is cut higher.

I’m self-conscious about my bigger lats and so I’m always happy when a tank is cut high enough that it covers this area. The one negative is that this tank will show your bra straps thanks to the spaghetti strap so even if you wear a racerback bra, you will see the straps. Your options are to wear your bra despite the straps showing (I don’t mind this if it’s a nice bra), wear a strapless bra or go braless.

The one area where I would have preferred the XL over the L is in the upper back. It doesn’t feel tight at all, but the material wants to fold a little bit across my bra band. Silk has 20% stretch so I am sure the fold is just a temporary thing as the material relaxes to my shape. I’m currently up a bit in weight so I think this size would have been 100% right at my usual weight, and I hope it will fit perfectly once I’ve dropped the winter extras.

Style/Cut

As you can see, I purchased two different styles. One is the racerback charmeuse style and the other is the cadence style with regular straps. I thought I would prefer the cut of the regular straps but actually, I like them both. I think the racerback is a little more modest in the back because it comes up higher at the arms.

These tanks are 100% quality silk so they do require dry cleaning. I’ve washed silk tanks at home before very carefully and they’ve been fine but I wouldn’t risk it with these. The luster of the sapphire charmeuse silk is so beautiful that it would be a shame to lose that. Since I’m doing a lot of thrifting lately for myself and for my Poshmark store, I spend a lot of time at the dry cleaners already so I don’t mind the higher maintenance laundering.

I love these tanks so much that I can definitely see myself buying more as they go on end of season markdown. The full price is just a little high for me but catching them marked down puts them on par with a couple of Lululemon cool racerbacks or a swiftly tech LS.

Sezane Cardigan

I specifically purchased the sapphire cami to go with this amazing Sezane Cardigan that I thrifted a few weeks ago. This is my favorite thrift pickup so far and I initially grabbed it to sell on my poshmark closet.  I ended up keeping it for myself though. It’s a medium but fits perfectly. I still can’t believe I found something so beautiful in a brand I’ve been wanting to try for so long. I’ve worn it a lot so far with a plain tee shirt underneath but it really needed a pretty feminine cami

Honestly I really looked forward to buying a Cami NYC tank. They look very elegant and versatile. However, I did end up trying one that I found on sale from Anthropologie, and I was very disappointed in the fit and quality. The tank ran small and had absolutely no give at all. The lace looked cheap and the fit was not particularly flattering on me. I’m certain I could find a nicer top for the price. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had purchased one of the silk ones. The one I bought was velvet. I was sadly not impressed.

Interesting. I did see the velvet ones on sale but didn’t gravitate to them. The lace looks really nice and well sewn on the ones I purchased.
