My Top 5 Tips For Beginner Trail Runners
My Trail Running Journey
My name is Catherine Aird, I am a 47 year old mom of three, social media coach and marketer based out of Whistler, British Columbia. I have decided to do lace up my best trail running shoes and run a 50 km trail before I turn 50, or even better, by the end of this summer. There, I’ve said it to the world, now there is no turning back. I am so scared.
I have been running since I was in high school
Permission was granted to skip French class to go to track practice when I was in high school.Trail running is a whole new level for me. I’m afraid of the pain, of the terrain, of getting lost, of not being able to move forward anymore, of letting my kids down and yes, of being too old to make it.
Why on earth would I decide to do such a thing?
I blame it all on this amazing woman, Jen, and on the pandemic. Jen was the initial spark. She stood up years ago in a yoga/goal setting class and announced to us all that she was going to do just that. Run a 50km race. I remember thinking that she was completely nuts, but I loved the spirit and the idea of setting big bold goals for ourselves.
I was inspired to run my first 50km trail run during the pandemic
In January 2022, despite all our efforts at “doing the right thing” my family got struck by Covid-19. As I was lying in bed, barely able to get up, I swore to myself that when could move again I would pin a race bib to my chest and sign up for something grand. All of a sudden there was this sense of urgency. As a result of feeling so sick, nothing could be taken for granted anymore. Our health, the ability to travel, to move freely. The time was, is now. It had been years since I had last competed at anything but I needed an event to push me, a date to lock it in.
The 25km P’ayakentsut Nordic Skate Ski race at the Whistler Olympic Park on February 26th 2022 was my first big scary event and it went surprisingly well. It was hard, but I did it and enjoyed the sense of accomplishment. Even more so, the training allowed me to go further and faster up in the mountains, exploring new terrain. Finding peace and fresh air in the trails of the Callaghan Valley.
Maybe, just maybe, I could try something hard in the summer
What Motivates Me
As I raised three kids and built my business, I used various running races to stay motivated, push my limits, and have a decent reason to sneak out of the house. I started with the super fun Seawheeze half marathon in Vancouver and eventually moved on to some trail/mountain running races in Whistler. Some biggish runs, but never more than 25km.
Of course, having such spectacular terrain in my backyard makes it easy to get off the beaten path. I love losing myself in the mountains (sometimes literally) discovering new trails and being rewarded by breathtaking vistas. There is something special about the smell of the forest after the rain and the thrill of reaching a summit.
Beginner Trail Runner? I’ve got tips for you
People often tell me that they find trail running intimidating, especially in the mountains. They are afraid of the wildlife, the steepness of the terrain, the unknown. I totally get it. Here are some tips for beginner trail runners:
1. Get the best women’s trail running shoes you can find.
Get good trail running shoes. This is so important for your body and for your safety. You want shoes that will offer a good grip on rocks and wet roots, or whatever terrain it is you’re running on. The best trail running shoes are the ones that allow you to run without foot pain, and feel in control. Try before you buy – all shoes fit slightly differently, even those from the same manufacturer. And bring your trail-running socks (ankle length with a bit of padding) when you’re trying on shoes.
I like having two pairs of runners. One with a stiff sole for rocky terrain and one pair that can be use both on pavement and normal trails. I alternate, depending of the route. I also find that switching trail running shoes while training for longer distances helps my feet and body recover faster.
Find the Best Trail Running Shoes
2. Start Small!
Whether you are an experienced trail runner getting back into it after a pause in the winter or starting your journey off road, start by walking / running and running shorter distances. You want to allow your muscles and all the little ligaments and tendons to get stronger. Gradually increase the distance weekly.
3. Always Plan Ahead
Plan. Plan your route, bring what you will need, and let someone know your route and expected ETA. When I’m in a city I like looking at Google maps satellite view and finding green space close to where I’m staying. In the mountains I refer to hiking and mountain biking maps. If I’m planning on running in the mountains, I try to fit most of the “Adventure Smart 10 Essentials” in my running vest.
4. Team Up With Other Trail Runners
Team up! Trail run with a friend or join a local group. Ask a running store, or search Facebook groups for events in your area. Don’t be shy, there is something for all levels.
5. Register Fast For Trail Races
Most local running races here sell out in minutes, but there was this beautiful coastal trail I had noticed on a surf trip with the kids on Vancouver Island. At 47km and 1,828 m (5,997 ft) elevation gain the Juan de Fuca was calling my name.
Training For My Juan De Fuca Trail Goal
My husband says I’m crazy but I do believe in the Universe. I believe that when you set yourself a goal, all of the sudden you start noticing tools to reach it.
For instance, as I was walking my dog with the kids to the school bus thinking about how great it would be to be able to run Juan the Fuca Trail but having no idea how to do it, I thought about this incredible athlete (Oliver Kennedy) who had given some fascinating sessions on long distance running.
The Universe Has Your Back
And there you have it, the Universe delivered. I turned around and Oliver was standing next to me, coming out of a driveway at 7:30am in the morning mist. I hired him on the spot.
I am scared but excited.
I have a big goal, a good trainer, the support of my family and so far I’m still standing. As I shared some insights on my soon to be training schedule (including 4-6 hour runs followed by sprints the next day… O M G ) I was told that I should quit, that I was too old to do such things and would get injured. It broke my heart but also gave me a little extra motivation. If I can do this, maybe others will be able to forgo the voices telling them “no” and have them reach their goals?
Listening to my body is so important!
I respect and listen to my body and my trainer. Slow and steady, one step at a time. When I get tired I think of how lucky I am to be healthy and I run for all of those who can’t.
I hope that my story will help light a little spark in someone’s mind. If it does let me know, I would love to follow you in your journey. You can follow mine on Instagram @catherineaird 50kmUpdates and discover some Whistler trails on my blog at catherineaird.ca.
Happy trail running!

lululemon Restfeel Slides
Size 6 - TTS
Hello The Sweat Edit blog fans. Coming to you from Windsor, Ontario where it’s the start of another hot, humid, and windy summer run season. I reached out to offer to do a review/comparison of the new Lululemon Restfeel Women’s slides Lululemon Restfeel Women’s slides. I am comparing them to two other “recovery” sandals that I already have by Hoka One One and Oofos.
As an avid runner, I was already looking for new run recovery slides.
As an avid runner and a diehard Lululemon fan I was pretty excited about Lulu’s foray into the footwear game. I may or may not have even been excited enough about it that I set an alarm for the release of the running shoe. Sadly, other than the gorgeous colour (I got Flare and was all heart eyes emoji about them) they were a fail for me. Who needs stability and support in a running shoe? This girl, that’s who. Onwards and upwards though, I appreciated the 30 day trial period that allowed me to get my money back and thus not harbour any salty feelings.
The lululemon white slides are perfect for summer outfits!
To be honest I kind of forgot about the slides that were slated to come out this “summer” and when I realized they had come out in the latest drop I was convinced they’d be sold out in my size (6). Not only were they still available but they were available in all THREE colours! I easily chose the white since I’ve had white slides on my summer “to buy” list and thought even if they don’t work out as much of a recovery slide as promised the price point was palatable to use them as just an everyday cute summer slide (as opposed to the running shoes where at $198 I could not just keep them as a cute sneaker).
How much are the lululemon slides?
The new lululemon slides are $58 USD or $68 Canadian. They are available in white, black, pink and green. There are men’s sizes and women’s sizes available.
The slides came to me in two business days which is super quick. My orders are generally at least five business days. As soon as I opened the box I knew I’d be keeping these. They are super cute – very minimal with the lululemon name unpretentiously stamped on the side. From the first wear they are definitely a pillowy feel. The toe box where the strap is was not overly narrow which can be an issue with my typical runner’s feet (read – bunions) and the material felt luxe.
How did the lululemon Restfeel Slides compare to Hoka One One and Oofos?
The big test came Sunday after my long run. 2 hours on my feet in the heat, even with great running shoes, leads to very tired feet and calves for at least a day. I generally can only bear to wear one of my recovery sandals for the remainder of that day and that’s why they need to be somewhat cute. Who knows who you’ll run into at the grocery store! Ha. Suffice it to say that these slides fit the bill. I wore them for two dog walks, and a trip to the grocery store. They look cute with denim cutoffs and a t-shirt and will also definitely look cute poolside this summer. In comparing them with my Hokas and my Oofos I’d say that the cushioning is less, but not so much as to make a difference and so I’ll be going with whichever looks best with my outfit. 😊
End result is that these are a keeper. Whether you are a runner looking for a recovery sandal or just looking for a cute pair of well made and super comfortable slides for the summer I’d definitely recommend these. Hopefully you can get your hands on a pair and love them just as much as I do!
Strawberry Milkshake Track That High Rise Short
Strawberry Milkshake Track That High Rise Short dropped today for the lululemon drop, and lululemon hijab debut. lululemon Strawberry Milkshake has been the most popular lululemon color this season.
The lululemon hijab finally dropped today. lululemon has been featuring a beautiful model on the website that wears a hijab for the past 2 years. Finally they released the hijab she’s been wearing, and a second one which is a scarf-style hijab. Athletic Hijabs are great as they are breathable and specifically designed for workouts. I like the adjustability feature on this one. In 2019 the International Boxing Association (AIBI) amended their guidelines to allow female boxers to wear their hijabs. You can read about the decision here.
What did you order this week? I’m still browsing around but I’m pretty sure I’m ordering the Track That High Rise Short in Strawberry Milkshake.

lululemon has officially ended the Seawheeze Half Marathon, and I am devastated
Seawheeze is over! lululemon made the official announcement today that SeaWheeze is officially over. The lululemon running community is reeling from this news as it was an epic community event that brought us all together from all over the world. This Vancouver half marathon was the best racing event.
I’ve been to every Seawheeze, right from the beginning and it was my most favourite event. My kids where babies, being pushed in a double stroller at the very first seawheeze event. Last week they where telling me the great memories they had of coming to the Seawheeze expo and seeing all the fun entertainment, and meeting all of my international friends.
I had suspected this was going to happen as post covid prohibitions dragged on. There where no hints of Seawheeze coming back this year or next. I also wondered if this bike lane issue impacted SeaWheeze organizers as it has other local Vancouver events. Also, the convention centre which hosted the Seawheeze expo was commandeered as a medical facility, but that was taken down last year.
Why did lululemon cancel SeaWheeze Half Marathon?
It seems lululemon is moving to a different running event going forward, in an effort to be more inclusive to all customers. I really hope it’s not a digital event as I’m completely zoomed out. I do participate in some Strava run events sometimes when I need motivation, but they aren’t exciting to me. Events like SeaWheeze, or the NY Marathon, or Boston, are all destination events. People work hard to be able to participate in these events and the journey is part of the event and part of the destination. It makes a small goal of running a certain distance, even more audacious. And memorable!
After two and a half long years of event cancelations, this was the thing I was most looking forward to having come back. I miss seeing my online digital lululemon friends in person each year. Face to face, running in colorful groups and sharing memories.
Vancouver has lost another great event with the cancelation of SeaWheeze
Vancouver, my home, has gone through a lot of changes the past two and a half years. SeaWheeze was a major tourist event that greatly benefited our city. It was always a sold out event with the majority of participants travelling from across North America. It is truly a loss for the city of Vancouver to have these types of event cancelations. I hope that the City of Vancouver didn’t make this event untenable through logistics, or restrictions and that they can do something to entice organizers back. The new Vancouver bike lanes certainly created a costly barrier for other local races that have had to reroute. This is entirely speculation as I don’t know what caused the decision to end this event. I hope they reconsider bringing SeaWheeze back to Vancouver in the future. Or maybe a MountainWeeze in Whistler is in order!
I wanted to make sure you all got the sad news. Make sure to check back here for more, and let me know in the comments what your thoughts are. And what your favourite SeaWheeze memories are!
Thank you to lululemon for bringing the most epic running event to Vancouver for 10 years, and for inspiring so many of us to start running. I don’t know that I would have ever imagined training for a half marathon had lululemon not created SeaWheeze. In fact, I have only ever run half marathons. I went from not being a runner, to running half marathons with no 5kms or 10km races in between.

The lululemon Throwback Astro Pant Just Dropped!
The Throwback Astro Pants just launched exclusively on the lululemon app. These are limited edition so you will need to order fast if you are wanting to get your hands on these.
Hot Tip! If the Astro Pants aren’t showing up on your lululemon App, make sure to refresh it. Fully close the app and reopen. If it’s still not there, check the app store to make sure you have the latest version or if you need to update the app.
Astro Pants originally came on the scene in 2012. They where a popular style for fans who preferred a softer waistband. So many of you guys where disappointed when they were discontinued. You can read about the original version here and see lots of old photos. The updated version has a higher rise, and is a 32.5 inseem length. They are now made with buttery soft Nulu which is fantastic. I really hope they come out with a shorter length for us shorties. I’d love to get a black pair.
Great option for lululemon maternity wear
I have a lot of recommendations for lululemon maternity pants, but I think these are ideal for third trimester wear. The waistband is so accommodating and can be worn up, or folded down under the belly. Of course pregnant women still need workout clothes! Many of us work out right until delivery day, and are itching to get back to it in the fourth trimester.
More lululemon Throwbacks?
It sounds like lululemon is going to do lululemon throwback drops for several styles, dropping each month. I can’t wait to see what drops next!
PS. Let me know in the comments what throwbacks you would love to see from lululemon. I’m working on my archives and would love to know what old styles I should revisit.
PPS. We also get a sneak peek on the lululemon sandals!
lululemon Prada dupe bag
See a side-by side of the best lululemon dupe. The lululemon prada dupe bag side by side with the Prada Re-Edition 2005 Re-Nylon. Who did it better?
A word on lululemon dupes, Prada dupe bags and dupes in general
I am not a fan of replicas or copies and feel very strongly that they are unethical, and damaging to society. The replica industry is a front for horrific human rights violations. It feeds a system of human trafficking, money laundering and organized crime. Replica bags purport to fool people into believing they are carrying a designer bag, or allowing someone to pretend as if they are carrying a designer bag. Don’t support that industry.
There is a big difference between a ‘dupe’ and a ‘replica’ or ‘copy’.
A dupe is a riff on a popular style element, which is different and unique enough that nobody would be confused weather you are carrying a $3000 Prada bag and all of it’s unique design features, or a lululemon crossbody nylon bag priced at $48.
The Nylon Bag Trend Without The Eye-Watering Price
lululemon’s design is uniquely their own. They have had one version or another of nylon crossbody bags for many years. The Prada Nylon bag is a simple, ubiquitous style in a non-luxury nylon material. The aesthetics of this bag are meant to be sporty, edgy and utilitarian.
There are three design features in the Prada bag which is also trending amongst many other luxury and high street brands. First, the nylon bag strap is seen in Louise Vuitton, Claire V. and many other designer brands. Next, the additional nano pouch attachment is also seen in many bag styles, like Louise Vuitton. Thirdly, the crossbody hobo shape is very ‘on-trend’ in bag design overall.
The lululemon Crossbody with Nano Pouch just happens to be a fantastic, ‘luxury like’ design in a not so eye-watering price point. As a luxury handbag lover, I’m hesitant to pay luxury prices for nylon. I reserve those special purchases for really special bags. I love that there is a lululemon version of the designer nylon bag trend so I can still get that chic design, for a very reasonable price.
So is the Crossbody with Nano Pouch a very good lululemon dupe of the Prada Re Edition bag?

lululemon run shorts, lululemon leggings and more
Summer blue lululemon run short is dominating this weeks product drop!
Poolside lululemon run shorts are dominating this weeks upload. I think the Speed Up Shorts will sell out, but I love the longer running shorts – the Hotty Hot High-Rise. And the best lululemon leggings, the sunbleached wunder trains. I’m going to order those as soon as the upload post is done. Those are a must have for me. Another item I think might sell out is the Strawberry Milkshake Define Jacket. Strawberry Milkshake has quite the following.
