Today Patagonia , in stark contrast to this mornings cyber monday upload by lululemon where they chose to upload their priciest items yet without adding to markdowns, has chosen a very different ad campaign. I really admire the message that Patagonia has sent to their customers which I’ve copied below. This has made me give Patagonia a closer look than I have in the past and since I know they stand by all of their products and now knowing what their corporate values are I wont hesitate in spending my good money with them. I like that they stand for community and accountability and not for objectivism.
Today is Cyber Monday. It will likely be the biggest online shopping day ever. Cyber Monday was created by the National Retail Federation in 2005 to focus media and public attention on online shopping. But Cyber Monday, and the culture of consumption it reflects, puts the economy of natural systems that support all life firmly in the red. We’re now using the resources of one-and-a-half planets on our one and only planet.
Because Patagonia wants to be in business for a good long time – and leave a world inhabitable for our kids – we want to do the opposite of every other business today. We ask you to buy less and to reflect before you spend a dime on this jacket or anything else.
Environmental bankruptcy, as with corporate bankruptcy, can happen very slowly, then all of a sudden. This is what we face unless we slow down, then reverse the damage. We’re running short on fresh water, topsoil, fisheries, wetlands – all our planet’s natural systems and resources that support business, and life, including our own.The environmental cost of everything we make is astonishing. Consider the R2® Jacket shown, one of our best sellers. To make it required 135 liters of water, enough to meet the daily needs (three glasses a day) of 45 people. Its journey from its origin as 60% recycled polyester to our Reno warehouse generated nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide, 24 times the weight of the finished product. This jacket left behind, on its way to Reno, two-thirds its weight in waste. And this is a 60% recycled polyester jacket, knit and sewn to a high standard; it is exceptionally durable, so you won’t have to replace it as often. And when it comes to the end of its useful life we’ll take it back to recycle into a product of equal value. But, as is true of all the things we can make and you can buy, this jacket comes with an environmental cost higher than its price. There is much to be done and plenty for us all to do. Don’t buy what you don’t need. Think twice before you buy anything. Go to patagonia.com/CommonThreads, take the Common Threads Initiative pledge and join us in the fifth “R,” to reimagine a world where we take only what nature can replace.
Store Report: Special Edition Cuddle Up, Sparkle Paris Pink Cuddle Up, Gratitude Wrap and More
Special Edition Cuddle Up Jacket $198
I have to say that this new Cuddle Up Jacket is gorgeous with all the pretty embroidered detailing on it but it is certainly not worthy of a $198 price tag. At most I think $138 would have been justified and I may have bitten the bullet at that price. $198 means it will not be going on my Christmas wish list either since I would be too embarrassed to ask someone to spend that amount on a sweat jacket, and it’s so close to Christmas that I wont be spending that amount on myself either.
This Paris Pink Sparkle Cuddle Up was gorgeous though at almost half the price. I’m wish listing it for now and am going to think about it. I don’t use my sweat jackets a ton so thats why I’m hesitating.
The Run Insulator Pullover is interesting. I don’t really like it for myself, especially since it is way, way, way to warm to run in and it doesn’t cross over to street wear very well but if you live somewhere especially cold a 650 power fill down pullover might make sense (Antarctica?). I do think it’s really cool that Lululemon has made something that no other running specific brand has made yet so it’s worthy of a try on. They also had a puffy vest in this Insulator line meant for running and I think thats probably something that I could see having greater appeal for runners. There is also a Run Turn Around Jacket that comes in Black Swan for those of you looking for a puffy down filled jacket. I’ll post more pictures in an additional post once I collect them from the various stores.
New Gratitude Wraps are in in this Heathered Coal/Coal color. It was pretty and soft but I didn’t feel the need to get one so I passed on it. All I picked up today was the Heathered Paris Pink Cool Racerback Tank.
Cabin Tee Long Sleeve Pink Ombre Stripes (and Links to the New York Times and Globe and Mail Articles)
I happened to find the Pink Ombre Stripe Cabin Tee Long Sleeve over at the Oakridge Lululemon this weekend and I have to say it is my favorite of the three Ombre Stripe Cabin LS’s by far. It doesn’t photograph true though because it looks quite bright in the photographs and all you see is the contrast between the Black Swan and Paris Pink, and although it IS bright in person you also see the softer pink micro stripes mixed in with the white and some of the other detail that just gets lost in pictures. Definitely a goodie.
Also, if you hadn’t already read these articles (CEO of the Year: Christine Day of Lululemon, Globe and Mail and Lululemon Athletica Combines Ayn Rand and Yoga, New York Times) head on over and have a read. My blog gets mentioned in both of those which is pretty darn cool. The New York Times also linked to another blog written by a marketing professor (Mixing Business and Beliefs) that offered an interesting view point about the Who Is John Galt? ad campaign that Lululemon used. Notice that lululemon is now using the white Christmas shoppers instead?
I also just wanted to clarify about my posts on lululemon black friday/cyber monday. I speculated about the possibility of a Cyber Monday upload based on this CBC News Article which I linked to in my post over here. The expectation for a Cyber Monday upload was further encouraged over on the Lululemon facebook page where hints were made throughout the week that we should expect something for Monday and that we should ‘keep checking back’. Customers have been asking on the facebook page all week for a clarification of what to expect. It has come to my attention that since customers are asking lululemon employees about cyber monday deals and are disappointed in what was uploaded (not a sale but in fact exclusive items with very exclusive prices -of course, after they built up the hype all week) they are being told that the ‘rumor’ was started by bloggers, not them. I just wanted to clarify that the ‘rumor’ was started by the CBC News (a respectable news publication) and perpetuated on the main lululemon facebook page throughout the week, I simply published what was already written and unfortunately I perpetuated the hype build up for a very disappointing upload.
Among a few other items, these Special Edition Cuddle Up Jackets and Scuba Jackets were uploaded tonight. Sadly, Lululemon’s version of Cyber Monday is not only NOT a sale but instead it’s an upload of uber pricey ‘special’ sweat jackets. Are you buying? I’m am not.

Scuba Hoodie Fur Hood US Side, $148
Is this something we will see tomorrow uploaded for Luluemon’s Cyber Monday? They’ve already hinted several times that we should stay tuned for a special upload on Monday and now they’ve posted yet another ‘sneak peek’ on the lululemon facebook page. I don’t normally care for ‘special edition’ tags from Lululemon but I do like that this one shows a series number on it, thats kind of cute. What is your guess as to what this is? I initially was thinking a special Gratitude Wrap but I see a zipper on it now that I look closer so I think it’s likely a Scuba Hoodie -so you can expect that to fetch $148 or more. I wish Lululemon would let us know how early they plan on doing this special upload.
Pink! Just a Random Post About Paris Pink (Sparkle Paris Pink Scuba, Cabin Tee LS, Pink Comparison)
Cali Lulu Buyers on facebook were lovely enough to provide a comparison photo of a few of the Lulu pinks. Left is the current Heathered Paris Pink which they report is especially soft compared to all of the Heathered CRB’s. I’m thinking of getting this one but I have Currant and Heathered Smokey Rose so I’m not sure. Middle CRB is Pow Pink and Right is Senorita Pink, both from a few years ago. We saw Senorita Pink last winter and Pow Pink was from about 2009-2010
I don’t need this Heathered Paris Pink Sparkle Scuba, I really, really don’t….but I LOVE the black logo on it. I think it’s the nicest contrast logo I have seen on any of the scubas. Hot Pink and Black is such a wicked combo.
I’ve been hunting this Cabin Tee LS and I cannot wait to get it. I’ve been very sadly living in my Black Ombre stripe one until I added the Purple Ombre Stripe to my rotation and now I at least look like I do some laundrey. I love that the Purple one has solid Black Swan on the inside and I’m a bit bummed that this Pink one reverses to blurred grey just like the Black Ombre Stripe -solid pink on the inside would have made it truly awesome.
Some sharp eyes from Lulu This Just In found this image on the lululemon website (US mobile site) under the Brisk Run Gloves for what looks like a Run: For It Pullover in Paris Pink.
Run: For It Pullover Paris Pink
The Currant Run: For It Pullover
Not a huge upload today considering the amount of items we’ve seen in the product drops and product alert emails this week but I think the web traffic would be less today anyways because of the US Thanksgiving so a smaller upload makes sense. I’m really wanting the Purples Ombre Stripe Cabin Tee LS but I’ve decided to check my store for it in hopes of instant gratification, and perhaps they also have the Pink Ombre Stripe that they listed. Lately my online orders have taken longer to get to me so if I know my store is getting that item it’s just easier to go there. The Currant CRB tank has been on just about everybody’s wish list and since the Solid Tango Red CRB only made it to select stores back in May I know a lot of you had this one ‘angeled’ to you in fear of the same. The color is really gorgeous in person and a true cherry red. I hadn’t even had it on my radar but once I tried it on I couldn’t pass it up. The Elevation Space Dye Scoop Neck Tank is also so gorgeous in person and I wish there was a CRB in that print as well but Scoop Necks just aren’t for me so I will admire it on others.
What did you guys get today?
