Lululemon Opens A Men’s Store in SoHo

by Cristina November 15, 2014
written by Cristina

Lululemon Men tweeted the address of their first Men’s Lululemon location the other day and it is quite close to the SOHO Lululemon store. Here is a street view of the location on 127 Prince Street in Manhattan.

A few years ago I would have said that there is no chance Lululemon has much traction in the men’s line, especially in Canada where the men scoffed at going into the stores with their wives and girlfriends. Lululemon, for men in Vancouver was a much harder market to crack since it was seen as a women’s only line, or as the men in my life called it ‘for the ladies’. They would wear the clothing, but only if the wives purchased it for them. Smart men knew that going in to the store for errands for their wives meant being treated like royalty by the educators. Just recently, my brother in law (who you would never expect would like Lululemon) asked me what Lulu pants my husband was wearing (Seawall Lined Track Pant) because he really wanted a pair for himself. And then I saw the weirdest thing. On Thursday I went in to return an item to the Coquitlam store and there were two men in line ahead of me – they were burly blue collar construction worker types and they each had at least three items to purchase. The one guy said to the other ‘I’m stocking up on these pants (pointing to the pants he was wearing) because they are so great for work’. And they were very engaged in conversation with the educators about the product. These where not the athletic types that have more readily embraced lululemon but  a completely different demographic of men that have resisted, more of the weekend warrior type of guy. It was striking to me to see these two guys enthusiastic about buying lululemon, on their own, without wives or girlfriends as chaperones. When I was in New York a few weeks ago, I saw a ton of men walking around in full lululemon outfits. Much more than I saw women wearing Lululemon.

Lululemon isn’t simply opening up a men’s department in a stand alone store, they are branding an entire line with a dedicated social media stream, blog posts with male athletes, male centric topics and great burly and edgy photography – not the yoga centric lululemon of the past, not the lululemon that marketed to men through their wives. I think that, above all else, this is what is expanding this market for Lululemon very successfully. The fact that they recognize that if they want the general male customer and not just a niche, then they need to market to them in a very different way than they do to women, because men have always loved the product, they just didn’t like to admit it. I’m curious what the new stores will be called and what it will look like.

Here is a time magazine article about the new Lululemon Men’s store in SoHo.

Ultraviolet is back! Expect to see at least a few more basic items in this. (thanks to Ms. S for the photo)

Seamlessly Covered Tank in Ultraviolet

Fluffed Up Jacket in Nightfall layered over Ultraviolet Seamlessly Covered Tank

I love Pigment, but not in this jacket. In this jacket my preference is Nightfall. I’m going to wait and hope that we see a Dance Studio Jacket in Pigment or something else I like.

One of the new Define Jackets is now out in US stores. This looks like Inkwell Tri Geo to me, but that is a guess.

Britt’s Picks!!

by Cristina November 14, 2014
written by Cristina

Yay! Britt’s Picks are up and in the write up she mentions that the Define is back for at least the next few seasons. There is another brown cotton Roll Down Wunder Under coming, Rich Earth, which is different from Heathered Bark. I love them both but I’ve got the Heathered Bark and don’t need a second pair. I wonder if the Beat The Street Pants are this years version of the Dog Runners. I need some Glyde over RULU pants to survive soccer practice.

Rumour Confirmation: Define IS Coming Back Soon!

by Cristina November 14, 2014
written by Cristina

Confirmation from Somerlea at Lululemon HQ that we indeed will be seeing the Define Jacket come back on next weeks upload. I broke the news yesterday (here) with two sources letting me know that the Define was coming. So it looks like we will be seeing Black, Bordeaux and Herringbone (giant herringbone?). We will also be seeing twice weekly uploads from US Thanksgiving until Christmas, so pace yourselves. It’s a marathon not a spring!!

Fit Review: Paradise Grid Very Green Multi Cool Racerback

by Cristina November 14, 2014
written by Cristina

My Paradise Grid Very Green Multi Cool Racerback just got delivered and I’m not sure about it. Out of the bag I didn’t love it, but on I like it. I find it intriguing but not sure it’s enough to keep. The material is a thick silky polyester but it’s not unpleasant, it’s actually very soft. The back of the print is white but the pattern doesn’t seem to distort or fade on this one. I do find the geometric lines accentuate curvatures so that will either be a great thing for you or a nightmare. I’m finding it accentuating my winter pouch. I need to try it on again after a few weeks of strict eating.  Definitely I need to mull this one over though. If it was March, which is typically a Lululemon lull for me, I’d keep it. Since it is Fall/Winter when there are tons of items out that I love I’m inclined to return it, especially since it seems so out of season. I really can’t imagine paring this with herrinbone, pique, deepest cranberry or any of the other ‘winter’ items.

Rumour: Define Jackets Coming Back!

by Cristina November 13, 2014
written by Cristina

I now have two sources telling me that we will be seeing Bordeaux and Black Define Jackets back coming soon! I like to have at least two separate sources share a rumour with me before I publish. It is still a rumour, but at least one that has come from different sources. One reader has seen it at her stores product inventory list for upcoming items.  I’m not sure if this is a limited release, or a wide release but we will at least see Bordeaux Drama and Black.

Fit Review: Giant Herringbone Inspire Crops

by Cristina November 13, 2014
written by Cristina

My store had these gorgeous new Giant Herringbone Run Inspire Crops in today (which I had ordered on upload) so I got a chance to try them on before getting delivered to my house. They are AMAZING!! Compressive, totally opaque and the material is woven but still has the smooth breathable quality of luxtreme. Its not soft and cottony like luon herringbone but it is a really nice material. These are true to size (size 10 for me) but you can also size down if you don’t mind snugness around the middle and you wont get sheerness if you go with your lower size. I tried on both size 8 and size 10 and I was truly torn on what size to go with – size 8 was perfect but a little huggy in the waist area, and the print did not distort. The size 10’s felt good on but they were quite long and where more 7/8″ length on me and had bunching of fabric behind my knees. Order these before people realize how magnificent they are and they sell out! So far they are just on the Canadian side of the website.

Fuel Green Seize The Day Jacket

by Cristina November 13, 2014
written by Cristina

The Seize The Day Jacket is one of those items that is just not styled well enough online. At first I thought it was a jacket version of that Layered Long Sleeve Tee.  You really don’t see the potential of the jacket online and that it is like a swift version of a cropped denim jacket. I definitely want to try this on in store today.
