Fit Review: Scuba Hoodie III next to Scuba Hoodie II

by Cristina

I thought a side by side shot of the new Scuba Hoodie III to the Scuba Hoodie II would be helpful. Having tried it on in store I’m not really sure why the Scuba Hoodie III is a Scuba at all. It just seems more like the usual seasonal none scuba offering. It’s pretty much an On The Daily Hoodie but with thicker fuzzier cotton fleece. Lululemon puts out more stylish versions of cotton fleece jackets (like the En Route Jacket) over the winter months so I’m not sure how this jacket really fits in. It is soft and comfortable and definitely stretchier and more relaxed than a scuba but the Scuba Hoodie II is more flattering and substantial in design. I think the Scuba Hoodie II is warmer as well, although the III is snuggly.

The Scuba III is more generously sized and it felt looser than the Scuba II which I probably would have sized up in. Both the Scuba II and the Scuba III in these pictures are size 10. The Scuba III also appears to be longer and fit hits lower on the hip than the Scuba II.

Wow thank you so much for this! I am a Scuba II girl all the way. Not interested in the III at all after this comparison. The ONLY thing that might get me to try one is if it comes out in a color that is irresistible. Other than that, I'll wait for more II's and winter styles to pop up!

Love the side by side comparison! Do you know which other colours were available for the Scuba III?

I completely agree Sophie! A big nope to the Scuba Hoodie III for me! The looser and longer cut just isn't going to work for me, the Scuba II is perfect fit for me.

If I want a 'relaxed fit' hoodie, there are countless other brands I will go to (and do). The fit on the Scuba II is kind of the whole point

Exactly! And for much cheaper than $118!

I don't mind paying $108 for a Scuba II, but won't pay that or more for a frumpier hoodie!

Thanks so much for this helpful post. I agree 100% with Lulumum and the commenters here. The cut of Scuba II is very figure flattering; I feel as if it enhances almost everyone who wears it. Because I am only 5'3", the combination of the length and width will make the Scuba III unwearable for me. The price tag of $118 is a further deterrent.

Guys, I don't like a lot of these changes we're seeing 🙁 Not happy with this new Scuba III at all, I really hope the Scuba II isn't being phased out.

Also, not liking the look of the new 'contour' waistband on the Wunder Unders 🙁 Haven't tried them yet, but not liking what I see. I don't think these will work well for those of us who are shorter with bigger butts/wider hips and smaller waists, as it looks to be made wider at the top of the waistband. I'm on the short side at 5'2" and have a shorter upper body and the waistband on the regular rise wunder unders does come up higher on me and ends near smaller part of my waist, so the contour part that is wider might make the waistband too big for me now 🙁 and sizing down won't work because I have a bigger bum and wider hips 🙁 I guess I won't know until I try them but I don't like what I see so far. Has anyone tried these yet? If so, what did you think?

So agree with everything said above. I wasn't interested it in based on the pictures, this IS a frumpier version at a larger cost. Don't get it. I picked up the Iris funky print scuba II this summer, and just love it. The look, the feel, the thickness. This new version looks like a sick, anorexic cousin that is more expensive. Sad….I don't think this will replace the Scuba II as LLL customers have eyes. And common sense.

Oh, I forgot to add, thanks LLM for the try on comparison!!! It confirms exactly what I first thought….

Wasn't there backlash when the II came out as well?

No the version prior to the Scuba II. The Scuba II fixed all the issues with the one prior. From what I remember, the material was the same as this III and it was missing a lot of the features of a regular scuba. I have a couple of those in prints I love, laceoflage and Alberta Lake Rose print. Hate the scuba itself but love the prints/color combos.

6:00: Oh, I am so jealous you got that Iris Space Dye Twist Scuba 2. It still hasn't come to the US. Ever since that pattern dropped in Canada, I've been on the lookout for it. Now that it seems as if the fabulous Scuba II (as Lulumum pointed out it addressed the issues of the previous Scuba, being softer, a tad longer yet still figure-hugging) may be slowly phased out, I want this textured Scuba even more! I may need a wonderful Canadian angel to help me out if this Scuba doesn't make it to the US soon.

Thanks again Lulumum for all that you do.

Looking back, I see it was the "Stretch" version that upset a lot of people. Somehow, I thought it was the II when I posted.

The Stretch version was terrible, awful fit, so glad I never bought one of those despite there being a lot of very nice colours. I also never cared for the Remix Hoodie, boxy fit, no stretch. I absolutely love the Scuba II and the previous Scubas that were just like the II's, they're the perfect hoodie! I can't understand why they're phasing the II's out now that they've been perfected. There is no way I'm going to settle for the new Scuba III's, no matter what gorgeous colours they'll be coming in.

I don't know why they keep messing with their best seller/staple items. I have about 10 of the original scuba design, and I'm so glad I kept them. Because, then they started messing with it! I bought two of those bad ones (before the Scuba II) in colors that I couldn't resist and ended up selling them a year later because I couldn't stand the fit.

I think the best part of the original scuba design is those ribbed panels. It's really what sets it apart from other brands, imo. I can get a loose fit hoodie with thumb holes just about anywhere, they even sell generic versions at Costco. I won't be buying the new ones, even if I like the print, it ends up just being a waste of money for me.

Completely agree! They always seem to mess up the favourites 🙁 If they want to try something different to try and please the people complaining then they shouldn't completely change and take away what is already working so well for so many of us, they should just add on another version in addition to what is already working and favourite of so many.

I am in the minority that I disliked the look and feel of the scuba II. Too tight in the under arms and too constricting overall. For me this new scuba is more relaxed and attractive.

I too am in the minority. I find the scuba scuba a original and ii's stiff and constricting and not something I just throw on when I am chilly in the house. Now if I am outside and it's windy, walking the dog…I love it. I just bought a scuba iii and love the thinner weight. It's cozy and soft and a bit longer. Now if it only had cuffins….id say it'd be perfect!

the III is NOT frumpy. I'm 5'2" muscular, fairly lean and large busted. the II just doesn't fit me right – extremely tight in the upper body area including arms, chest and back. it fit like a straight jacket or for anyone familiar with powerlifting – like a bench shirt where my arms felt like they were being forced forward. I tried the III and it is not baggier in the lower body, nor is it longer. It's just cut a bit roomier in the upper body, where us big breasted gals need the room. I bought the II online and sized up as I've read I should do, and no go. I tried on a bigger sized II in person and still no go. Any larger than that and the fit would have been way off. Tried on a III and it fit a lot better and i didn't need to keep upping the size to find a good fit.
